The Waterloo Bay Region

This area encompasses south east of the Brisbane River with its suburbs of Wynnum, Manly and Lota lining the foreshores of Moreton Bay, this part of the bay is known as Waterloo Bay.

Wynnum, Manly and Lota were set up as an outer municipality with their own council originally but as Brisbane grew they like other councils succumb to the expansion and is now fully integrated. Transport in the area consists of both rail and bus with a 25-30 minute ride to the centre of Brisbane.   Shopping is by way of a local shopping centres in Wynnum, Wynnum West and Manly or there are major shopping complexes within a 20 minutes drive.  Whilst the suburbs are on the foreshores of Moreton Bay they are approximately one hour away from the Gold Coast in the south and a little over one hour from the Sunshine Coast in the north.   Brisbane’s airport complex is on the northern side of the river and only a 1/2 hour away via the Gateway Bridge and Motorway.  A rail connection from the Airport, takes 15-20 minutes to the city.  The main shipping terminal for the Port of Brisbane is situated at the mouth of the Brisbane River on Fisherman Island some  5 minutes drive away.

Brisbane commenced as a penal colony in 1824 and was proclaimed a municipality on the 7th September 1859 while our State of Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony on 10th December 1859. A number of islands can be found close by in the bay such as Green, King, Peel and St.Helena.  St.Helena was used as a prison for convicts these days the prison has been partly restored and is a tourist attraction while Peel was a leper colony. Forming the outer side of the bay are the islands of Moreton, North and South Stradebroke.
