Immortal Beloved

by Naomi Sheridan

An aged Klingon walked to the spot under the willow tree, marked by a white marble headstone. He bent, bones creaking, until he was sitting in the ground beside it. The Bajoran lilacs he was carrying replaced the dead blood roses.

For the last time, Admiral Worf read the inscription that was a monument to his dead wife.

"Jadzia Dax.

(2341 - 2385)
Daughter of Kela and Taylin,
wife of Worf, mother of Orias and Errikin.
She will be missed..."

The ancient Klingon's mind wandered back to the first time he laid eyes on the beautiful creature who enchanted him from even that moment.

"Lt.Cmdr Worf, this is Lt.Cmdr. Jadzia Dax."

The breathingtaking vision smiled coquettishly, gestured to her Camalot garb, "And I don't usually dress like this, either!"

The bright smile, and the flirtatious pointing out in an exotically accented high Klingon that she was better looking than the wizened 'Old Man' whose memories she held were burned into his memory for all eternity...

"Worf?"

"I am in here, Jadzia!" he called.

She entered the office, and sat on his lap, wrapping her long arms around his neck, fingering the four pips proudly.

" I have to take the Defiant to the Gamma Quadrant for a while; can you handle Errikin and Orias, or should I ask Nerys and Odo to lend a hand?"

"We will be fine, but I will miss you, Jadzia." He spoke honestly, baring his soul as only a warrior in love could.

In response the Captain of the Defiant, put her hand on the Captain of Deep Space Nine's neck and pulled his lips to hers.

" I won't be gone long!" she had promised...

The next time he saw her, she was in the Defiant's morgue, laid out with a phaser burn on her chest, Dax gone...

Worf closed his eyes as if to block out the painful memory which haunted his dreams, a pale, motionless Jadzia, still lovely even in death....

He turned his thoughts to a happier time, a time when he knew no pain...

"For honour and service, above and beyond the call of duty, I hereby grant Cmdrs. Worf and Dax the rank, and all privileges due to the rank of Captain!" Benjamin pinned the rank insignia and stepped back to let the couple embrace.

Jadzia was radiant. "Worf, I have some news..."

Worf looked quizzically at her, and she smiled at him; "I'm pregnant!"

Worf smiled broadly, and let out a whoop of delight which brought the party to a standstill.

"I'm going to be a father!"

An exhausted Jadzia lay sleeping in the infirmirary, and Julian and Worf were talking, standing over the dual cots.

"Twins! Well, I'll be..." declared Julian. "have you and Jadzia discussed names?"

The proud father been beamed, "We have yet to narrow the short list..."

"Worf!" came Jadzia's sleepy voice. The Klingon scooped up the twins and carried them to his wife's bedside. After a heated discussion the parents settled on Orias Mogh for their son, and Errikkin Nerys for their daughter.

It was beginning to get dark Worf knew he didn't have much time left. When he realised he was dying, he had written three letters, one to each of his of his children and their families; Alexander and K'Eyla; Errikin, Antos and little Jadzia; and one to Orias and Kimberley...

Yet he needed to be with her when he died. The warrior was frightened and needed her reassurance. At the graveside he felt closest to her, and so whenever he needed her, he visited the grave...

He felt his eyes close for the last time, and heard her voice whisper in his ear, "Let go, Worf. It's time for us to be together again..."

The next morning, Errikin found her father's dead body sprawled across her mother's grave...

A testament to the powerful love they'd shared he'd sought her out in his dying moments, confident in the belief that she was waiting for him on the other side...

The funeral was three days later, and Worf, son of Mogh, was laid to rest beside his Jadzia...

The gravestone now reads;

"Jadzia Dax and Worf

(2341 - 2385) (2340 - 2401)

'Not even death could come between their love!'

They are mourned by their descendants, friends and the Quadrant they helped to keep free..."

finis....
