In the calm parts, you wonder how this river can get so upset. And then around a corner, the current sweeps you very rapidly into its caldrons. This river demands respect and skill, uncommon traits among novices. Unlike many others, this river does not smooth out in high water. Instead, the rapids get more difficult: the current gets stronger, the holes bigger, created by water funnelling together and pouring over rocks, scooping a great dent and then bouncing back upstream. The peaks and troughs of water piling up also get higher and deeper and the shore rock disappears. If your attention wanders, you will be swept over a saillie or high ledge, water pouring into your canoe before you react to power out of the torrent behind you. Can you get to shore before the next rapid takes over? Overnight, this river can surprise you, rising many feet into your camp if you are careless. And many kilometres separate the campsites. You do not want to negotiate a rapid or search for gear in the dark. Think about stopping early and relaxing instead of trying to reach the next campsite. You cannot run the rapids in the dark. Access to the river is deceptively easy; no park portage and camping signs disturb your wilderness experience and rescue is expensive. Yes, this is one of the best whitewater wilderness experiences around. |
