Analysis - Socialist Writers

Socialism is not a new idea. It had been around before Marx and Engels and has since
been advocated by many famous writers.
The Loathsome mask has fallen the man remains
Sceptreless, free, uncircumscribed, but man
Equal, unclassed, tribeless and nationless,
Exempt from awe, worship, degree, the king,
Over himself, just, gentle, wise.
(Prometheus Unbound )
Human beings are partakers of a common nature; what conduces to the benefit or pleasure
of one man will conduce to the benefit or pleasure of another. Hence it follows, upon the
principles of equal and impartial justice, that the good things of the world are a common
stock, upon which one man has as valid a title as another to draw for what he wants.
(Political Justice )
Our business, I repeat, is the making of Socialists, i.e., convincing people that
Socialism is good for them and is possible. When we have enough people of that way of
thinking, they will find out what action is necessary for putting their principles into
practice. Until we have that mass of opinion, action for a general change that will
benefit the whole people is impossible
(Where Are We Now?, 1890, p. 226.)
Socialism, Communism, or whatever, one chooses to call it, by converting private
property into public wealth, and substituting co-operation for competition, will restore
society to its proper condition of a thoroughly healthy organism, and ensure the material
well-being of each member of the community.
(The Soul of Man Under Socialism)
What is denounced as utopian is no longer that which has no place and cannot have any
place in the historical universe, but rather that which is blocked from coming about by
the power of established societies.
