First attempt was in 1994 when the political situation in Chiapas with the revolt and uprising of the Zapatistas made it too dangerous to travel by road from Mexico via Belize to the small town of Flores.
Nine years later tavelling from Canada to Palenque in Mexico by
Truck camper, then bus to the Guatemala border, outboard motor driven canoe up the
Usamacinta River to Guatemala and 4 � hour bus ride over 2 days to
