The following is a story by one of my friends. She refused to be a victim and scared the shit out of her "would be rapest". She sets a very good example and I admire her strength. She has been asked to be held anonymous but if you are interested in talking to her, sharing a similar experiance, or asking a question, you can e-mail her.

I have a story about rape from when I was 19. One day at OU, I was walking to the art school and a very large black guy came up very close behind me. He asked me how I would feel if he raped me in much more graphic terms than I just used. There were no other people around and I was sure that was exactly what he meant to do to me. So in the moment it took to turn to him and look him straight in the eyes, I prepared myself to play a very important part--perhaps one of the most important I have ever played. I then very calmly and clearly stated that I was a practicing witch with great knowledge of black arts. If he raped me, I would have everything I needed ( a very personal item from him--hair, blood, semen) to make his life a living hell. If he killed me, I would use my ability as a medium to haunt him and set demons on him until he begged them to kill him.

He immediately looked away, then turned and walked quickly away.

I walked to the nearest phone and called the police to tell them that a potential rapist was on the North Oval. I don't know what happened, but I knew that they could do nothing to him from what he had said to me. Maybe something else good came from it if he had done others and the police watched him.

The key was that he believed me. That was because in the second I had, I made sure that I believed that I could and would do those things to him. It does no good to be a victim, though it is very hard not to be a victim with the upbringing most girls and some boys have.

I truly believe that I need to help others learn not to be victims. If you want to use my story, use it. I feel strongly that being prepared is one of the best ways not to be a victim.
