Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
www.landpower.co.nz
Nitrous oxide or dinitrogen oxide is made of two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. It is a colorless gas with a sweet taste and odor. N2O has a density of 1.98 grams per liter. It is soluable many solvents including water, alcohol, and ether. A nirtous oxide molecule has a linear shape (N = N = O). It is one of a few different nitrogen oxides including nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide.  N2O decomposes into Nitrogen and oxygen when heated. Besides being a greenhouse gas nitrous oxide is used in dentistry as the anesthsia laughing gas. N20 is also used in aerosols and rocket motors. Nitrous oxide is naturally emitted from both the soil and oceans. It is also produced through animals urinating, the buring of fossil fuels, and the use of fertilizers. Nitrous oxide has a global warming potential of 270.
