Cloud is the main character in Final Fantasy VII. At the initial onset of the game the player takes on the persona of Cloud, a new member of the mercenary group AVALANCHE. He aids them in deactivating the Mako reactors for a price, but as he realizes that SHINRA is truly corrupt he becomes engulfed in the battle for the planet and finding the truth about himself. In the early parts of the game Cloud's mind seems to flood with overwhelming images that he cannot perceive at first, but over time the truth about his memories becomes evident. Aeris calls him her bodyguard, and throughout the game until Aeris' demise he has difficulty dealing with his emotions regarding Tifa and Aeris. He felt that was very close to Tifa in Nibelheim before he entered SOLDIER, and had made a promise with her that when after he completed his destiny he would return to her, but in actuality this memory was an illusion.
