There are three character names that stand out clearly as having some alterior meaning or portent to the overall atmosphere of Final Fantasy VII. These characters end up being at the very core of the Final Fantasy VII story, and a look at their very name can be indicative of their personality. These three characters are Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockheart, and Sephiroth. When an examination of the words of their name is done, an interesting saga is told.
Cloud Strife. He is a rather mysterious character, although the leader of the group. His name evokes an image of a troubled individual. His memories are clouded and there is and has been much strife in his life. This is portrayed in the game and the plot unfurls the veil self denial and doubt that Cloud has been hiding behind is lifted.
Tifa Lockheart is a little different. She has feelings for Cloud and actual memories regarding Cloud that she keeps rather locked away in her heart. Tifa cares for him but doesn't allways show it.
Sephiroth is the most mysterious and anomalous characters of Final Fantasy VII. His peculiar name is actually a word used in the Jewish religion to represent a complex multi-faceted aspect of a God or supreme deity where to achive holiness a follower must pass the Sephiroth or tests of God. This is detailed in a Jewish text called the Kabbalah. Interestingly enough, itsn't that what Sephiroth was trying to attain, to become omnipotent like a god. He wanted to merge with the very essense of the planet, but it was Aeris who foiled his intentions.
