For the past few days now a great storm has been growing ever larger in the Atlantic Ocean and soon it will threaten me and the residents of my community. This storm is called a Hurricane. Hurricanes in the Atlantic form when areas of unstable weather begin organizing to form vorticular areas of low air pressure often accompanied by rain and wind. As the areas of low pressure grow larger and more circular in nature they form into Tropical Storms. Tropical Storms are characterized by having maximum sustained winds of between 39 and 74 MPH. In themselves Tropical Storms can cause flooding rains and damaging wind gusts. When a Tropical Storm continues to develop further it becomes a Hurricane. The conditions for the creation of Hurricanes are most favorable when High Air Pressure in the upper atmosphere is present. Hurricane force winds are always in excess of 75 MPH. Hurricanes themselves are classified on ascale of 1 to 5, one being the minimal and five being catastrophic, capable of leveling anything in it's path. This is called the Saffur-Simpson Scale. Currently there is a Hurricane called Floyd at the top of Category 4 (155 MPH maximum sustained winds) heading in a direct-line toward my part of the world. This Hurricane is expected to make landfall soon and the potential damage toll is projected to be in the billions of dollars. In 1992, a weaker storm called Andrew destroyed the entire town of Homestead and left a swath of destruction across the State of Florida killing over 100 people and destroying thousands of homes and businesses. People have begun purchasing mass quantities of plywood to board up windows, batteries, water, canned goods, and flashlights in futile hope of "riding out" this killer storm. Many people have taken the storm rather apathetically and do not feel evacuation is necessary, some even feel it is worthy cause for drinking and having parties. I fear these people may learn a difficult lesson from their short-sightedness. Forecasters are unsure of the exact track of this Hurricane, but it seems that the most devestating wind will pass to the north of me yet there will be a considerable amount of surge and wind associated with this storm for a very wide area likely to cause severe damages to structures and trees in my area. Massive beach errosion is expected. If ordered to evacuate, my family and I may do so, otherwise we may stay and Video Gamer X will experience the most awesome force of nature.
