ZELDA 64 GAIDEN INFORMATION

Well, it's official now, Zelda 64 is going to have a sequel to be debuted at Japan's Spaceworld in August called "Zelda 64: Gaiden" (which means addition or to add to) Unfortunatly for us in the States we may very well NEVER see this game since it is planned for the 64DD. 64DD? I thought that thing was dead and gone, but it seems it's been ressurected, but only for gamers in Japan at the moment. Total Bummer for us Zelda fans in America. So far Nintendo is making no indications that it will appear in The United States, but perhaps if it shows widespread appeal in Japan it will be made available for us, but all this is a big IF. I just don't see this thing taking off even for Japanese gamers who are preparing for the Next Generation of Consoles that will use DVD format discs and have 128-bit multi-million polygon graphics to be released in their country very soon. The 64-DD looks to be another "enthusiast" peripheral similar to the Super Scope 6 and SEGA's 32X. If 64DD was launched at the very beginning when the N64 was first getting established then it would have been a totally different story. I just have this really bad feeling that we in America will never see this thing come to our local game retailer and if we want to see what Zelda 64: Gaiden has to offer we will have to import a 64DD and the game. With Nintendo's "Project Dolphin" wating in the wings for a September 2000 release and Playstation 2 on the horizon, I just don't see what Nintendo is trying to do by FINALLY releasing the 64DD. When these Next Generation Consoles come out, NO ONE will want a clunky Zip-Disc Drive machine (capable of holding mere 100MB) on a dated 64-bit console when they can get many GIGS onto one DVD and play far better quality games. This is a very risky move on their part, and may prove a failure, but I'm never one to write the conclusion before the story is written. There is the chance that Nintendo will make a moderate success out of this venture and by some ultimate stroke of luck we gamers in America will get a chance to see this new peripheral and Zelda 64: Gaiden. I sure hope so, but I have my doubts. We'll just have to wait and see. If I see any hints of this happening in America, I'll let you know.
