 ANJU AND KAFEI SIDEQUEST WALKTHROUGH
By Dhsu ([email protected])
If you're reading this guide, that probably means you're having trouble with
at least one aspect of the multi-faceted Anju and Kafei sidequest in Majora's
Mask. Anju and Kafei are the two individuals that require the most
attention and intervention from Link in solving their unique predicament, which
spans all three days. This walkthrough is designed to provide you with
everything you need to know (and a little more) to make sure that they both live
happily ever after.
There are several items you can obtain during the course of these
events. These include the Keaton Mask, the Couple's Mask, the
Postman's Hat, and an empty bottle. The purpose of the masks will be
explained when you get to them.
Before you run off to the Happy Mask hunting grounds, though, there is one
prerequisite for your quest. You will need to have access to the Ikana
Canyon, which means that you'll need to have the Garo Mask (the Gorman brothers
give this to you if you beat them at horse racing) and the Hookshot (which
you'll have by the time you get to the third temple). Realize also that is
impossible to retry any of these events without warping back to the first day
and losing all your progress in the process. So if this is your first
time...then you shouldn't be reading this! Shame on you!
*ahem* Actually, what I was going to say is that it might help to slow
down the flow of time by playing the Inverted Song of Time (which is just a
backwards Song of time). If you're already a seasoned veteran...you STILL
shouldn't be reading this! Errr, I mean, then you can skip directly to
Sections XII and XIII at the end of the guide.
Okay, all ready now? Good, let's get started.
THE FIRST DAY Right when you begin, you notice a small boy wearing a
Keaton Mask walk to the postbox and drop a letter in. He then proceeds to
run to the Laundry Pool and enters a room in the back. No use following
him; it's locked. Striking the bell with your sword will draw him out of
his hiding place, but only for a few seconds, or even sooner if you try getting
near him. What's up with him?
I. KAFEI This isn't technically part of the sidequest, but it ties
in directly with the storyline, so I've decided to include it just for the sake
of being complete.
It all starts on the first fateful morning when Link visits the Mayor's
Office in East Clock Town between 10:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. If you talk to
Madame Aroma, she will tell you that her son is missing and immediately recruit
you in the search for him by giving you Kafei's Mask. This won't happen if
you're in Deku form, though. You can also do this during the second day,
but why put off until tomorrow what you can do today? You'll be able to
learn a lot about this mysterious Kafei by talking to townspeople while wearing
this mask. I would also suggest you check his journal in Madame Aroma's
back room.
II. ANJU Not far from the Mayor's Office is the Stock Pot Inn,
where a nice lady named Anju works. At 11:00 A.M., she'll go the kitchen
to make lunch for her grandma and will mention something about a visitor later
in the day if you talk to her. When she's done serving lunch and goes back
to the counter at 1:45 P.M., you can talk to her and she'll ask if you have a
reservation (unless you're a Deku, since he's a little too small to be renting
rooms). You don't remember making one, but being the filthy liar that you
are, you of course say yes (you'll have to do this before 4:10 P.M., however,
when the REAL tenant arrives). You'll be given the key to the Knife Room
upstairs, in which the only things of interest are a treasure chest containing a
Silver Rupee and a crumbling portion of the wall. I wonder what that could
be for?
At 2:00 P.M. you'll see the postman come in and hand Anju a letter, but for
some strange reason he refuses to tell her where it came from. Did you
notice that she's the only girl that doesn't flirt with you? That's
because she's already got a man and they're getting married in three days.
Normally, this would make most brides-to-be giggling with excitement, but Anju
has the opposite reaction. Why? Her groom has disappeared, and just
three days from their wedding day, too! Hey, that sounds familiar.
She wouldn't happen to know anything about Kafei, would she? As soon as
the postman leaves at 2:18, put on Kafei's Mask already and ask her!
(Well, at least before she goes back to her room at 9:10 P.M.) She does
have a clue that might help you find him, but she's kind of busy right
now. Why don't you meet her in the kitchen at 11:30 tonight? Since
the Hero of Time doesn't have a bedtime, this is no problem with you. Now
all there is to do is wait.
III. THE MEETING Ahhh, finally, it's 11:30 P.M.! Time to see
what this is all about. If you got (translation: stole) poor Mr.
Link(-goro)'s key, then you'll be able to use the front door. But if you
didn't, have no fear, Deku Link is here! Just use the Deku Flower between
the inn and the treasure chest shop to float onto the inn's roof and sneak in
through the back door. Then go into the kitchen and you'll see Anju right on
time...more or less. If you actually had the nerve and stood her up,
she'll patiently wait until dawn before giving up, so you have until then to
give her a good explanation. You can't meet her as Deku, though! Or
as a Goron or Zora either, for that matter. Talk to her as regular Link
and you'll find out that, surprise, Kafei is supposed to be her future
husband! You also find out that the letter you saw her get in the morning
was from him, too. She's written a reply, but she's afraid to send it
herself. Would you mind doing it for her? No, not at all!
Anything for such a lovely lady. (Translation: choose "Yes" when she asks
you). She also mentions that you should be able to meet him when he gets
the letter. You can send it right after you're done talking, but I usually
wait until morning according to Anju's instructions.
THE SECOND DAY
IV. THE LETTER Rise and shine, it's time to deliver that
message! Stick it in a mailbox as soon as you can if you haven't done so
already. It's still a little early for the mailman, though, so you'll need
to wait for him. He'll collect it by 12:00 P.M. noon (so be sure to put it
in by then) and will send it in the afternoon.
V. SPECIAL DELIVERY Right around 3:00 P.M., you'll see our
industrious mail carrier head into the Laundry Pool and ring the bell.
Seeing a friendly face, the boy will come to get his letter and pause to have a
little chat. What's he hiding anyway? Quick, while he's talking to
the postman, this is your chance to sneak into his hideout and find out!
He'll come back in and will be ready to talk at any time from 4:10 P.M. until
the Curiosity Shop opens at 10:00 that night. Make sure that you don't
have a transformation mask on when you talk to the Keaton boy, since has nothing
to say to your alternate identities. He'll comment that Anju wrote about
you, and ask you if you can keep a secret. Well, of course you can!
(Translation: say "Yes"). So since Anju trusts you, he will too. But
what does Anju have to do with this? Before you can ask, he takes off his
mask and tells you. He is Kafei. What??? Shouldn't she be
marrying someone a little...older? Then Kafei explains that he actually is
a grown man, but became trapped in the form of a child as the result of one of
Skull Kid's pranks. He's not afraid to meet Anju because of his
appearance, though; it happens that his ceremonial wedding mask was stolen from
him while he was on his way to the Great Fairy's Shrine in North Clock Town, and
he promised to bring the mask to their meeting. He can't see Anju before
he gets it back, but he also has to let her know that he still plans on meeting
with her, so he tells you to give Anju his Pendant of Memories, which you can do
immediately after you're done talking. Hey, if this keeps up, you could
take over the postman's job. When he finishes, talk to him again and he'll
tell you about the peephole in the wall that lets him spy on the Curiosity Shop
customers. You don't really need it, since it isn't accessible when the
thief arrives at 12:30 A.M. close to midnight. No reason you can't hang
out at the shop itself, though. =) Hurry, though, their meeting only
lasts half an hour.
VI. THE PENDANT So what're you waiting for? Go ahead and do
what the guy says. Visit Anju again at the Stock Pot Inn and talk to
her. She asks you whether you've met Kafei yet, and since Link is mute and
unable to tell her himself, he gives her Kafei's pendant. Knowing now that
Kafei will keep his word after all, she agrees to wait for him. She'll
only wait until 9:10 P.M. for YOU to deliver the pendant, though.
VII. THE CONVERSATION Hey, has that wall in the Knife Room been
driving you crazy? Well, now is the time to see what it's for. From
9:10 P.M. to 11:00 P.M., you'll be able to go into Link's room if you have the
key and listen in on a conversation between Anju and her mother by checking the
crack in the wall. This has nothing to do with the quest, but it adds a
little to the story.
THE FINAL DAY If you still haven't delivered that pendant yet, now is the
time to do it! You can give it to Anju while she's sweeping the room the
Gorman Troupe was staying in (even though it's gonna be destroyed anyway...)
until 12:00 P.M. noon.
VIII. THE KEATON MASK Go back to the room in the Laundry Pool
sometime between 1:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M, and instead of Kafei you'll find the
shady owner of the Curiosity Shop. It seems that Kafei left a couple items
for you: the Keaton Mask he was covering his face with and a letter for his
mother which he wants you to deliver. You're really going to put that poor
postman out of business... The Keaton Mask allows you to talk to Keaton at
night after cutting up moving patches of grass like in North Clock Town and Milk
Road. The Curiosity Shop owner also mentions that Kafei spotted the thief
last night, who he mentions lives in Ikana Canyon. Well, that sure narrows
it down.
IX. SAKON'S HIDEOUT By 6:00 P.M., you should be at Ikana Canyon,
where you'll see Kafei hiding behind some rocks, waiting for the thief, who is
apparently named Sakon. You can hide with him, or slap on the Stone Mask
if you have it, since you'll have to start back at square one if Sakon spots
you. Soon after 6:00 P.M., the infamous thief should come prancing in and
will enter his hideout at the strike of 7:00. Follow Kafei and sneak in
while the door is open. Inside, Kafei sees his precious possession -- the
Sun's Mask! Just as he's about to grab it though, he accidentally steps on
a switch (don't ask me why he didn't notice something that big) and activates
the "impenetrable defenses". He tries chasing after the mask as it's
pulled along on the conveyer belt, but as soon as he steps off the switch, the
door immediately closes. In order to get through, he'll need someone else
to hold the door open, and who just happens to be there? That's right,
when he tells you to, step on the switch and open the door.
Now it might be a little disorienting at first, but realize that you now
indeed have control over Kafei. He's got some neat but pretty much useless
attacks and flips, so if you feel like it, you can take your time and check them
out before going through the door. When you do go in, push one of the
blocks into the switch to open the door for Link. Like Kafei's, Link's
task is fairly easy and you should be able to get rid of the Deku Baba in no
time. This will open the door for Kafei into the next room, where you'll
encounter a slightly harder puzzle. It's still a piece of cake, though;
the yellow switches slow down the conveyer belt and the red ones increase its
speed. Obviously, you'll want to step on the yellow ones and avoid the red
ones. Press the blue one to open the door on the other side and regain
control of Link. This time you'll come face to face with (*gasp*) TWO Deku
Babas! Dispatch them quickly to let Kafei advance to his final level in
this mini-dungeon. It's considerably more difficult, but the quickest way
to get through that I've found is to push the block in front of the door
downward and then push the center block onto the yellow switch. Don't
worry about standing on the red switch for a second or two. Then push the
bottom block onto the blue switch to open up Link's last section, which contains
exactly one Wolfos. In case you didn't know, defeating it is as simple as
staying away until it tries to swing and then stabbing your sword right into its
vulnerable behind. When that's done, make Kafei step on the closest switch
in the last room. Then move Link onto the final switch to deactivate the
security system and retrieve the Sun's Mask. Kafei will then hurry as fast
as his young legs can carry him back to Clock Town, where he has an appointment
to keep. If you messed up in Sakon's hideout, though, you'll have to do
everything over again. Also notice that although the whole thing took only
a few minutes, you've already warped to 12:00 A.M. with only six hours before
the moon crashes.
X. THE LADY OR THE POSTMAN? Now you have a decision to make.
Remember that letter Kafei gave you? Well, you'll find that two people are
too worried to flee Clock Town at the moment. One is Kafei's mother,
Madame Aroma, who you will find sitting alone in the Milk Bar, which you'll need
Romani's Mask to have access to. If you give the letter to her, she'll be
so relieved that she'll give you a bottle full of premium Chateau Milk (watch
out for the backwash!).
If you haven't gotten Romani's Mask yet though, there is another individual
who seems to be unwilling to leave the doomed village. This person is the
schedule-obsessed postman. Since leaving Clock Town is not on the
schedule, he is hopelessly stuck there until someone can modify it. If you
give him the letter instead, he'll deliver it to Madame Aroma, who will then
order him to evacuate. He is more than happy to obey and will wait outside
the bar. Talk to him and he will give you the Postman's Hat, which he has
no more use for. This mask(?) will let you check any of the postboxes in
Clock Town. Remember what I said about getting his job?
Obviously, you cannot get the bottle and Postman's Hat in the same three-day
period. That's right, you've got to do the WHOLE FREAKING THING over again
in order to get both! Stop tearing your hair out and realize that there
ARE shortcuts. The shortest possible route will be explained in Section
XIII at the end of the guide.
XI. ETERNAL LOVE At the Stock Pot Inn, Kafei will come in huffing
and puffing at precisely 4:15 A.M. to meet with his fiancee upstairs and by 4:30
(only an hour and a half before the moon crashes!) will go into the Employee's
Room, which is now unlocked. Follow him and after witnessing the short but
touching ceremony, you will receive the Couple's Mask, which has the power to
calm people down and stop arguments. Sounds like a certain Mutoh the
carpenter and Viscen the captain of the guard might need your help.
WHEW!!! That's it! That's all! Make you sure you save your
game, and have fun with your new Happy Masks! But wait...you want to do it
AGAIN? Well, in that case, the next section might save you a lot of
trouble. It sure does for me.
XII. THE SCHEDULE If you read the guide, and the only thing it did
was give you a headache, this might make a little more sense. This is just
a basic chart of each event in the side-quest during the three-day period.
Hope it helps. If you need a visual aid, take a look at your Bomber's
Notebook. =) And remember the Notebook doesn't have A.M. or P.M., so
after 13:00 you'll have to subtract twelve hours to convert it to P.M.
Day One 10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. -- Speak to Madame Aroma to get Kafei's
Mask. 1:45 P.M. - 4:10 P.M. -- Speak to Anju to get the key to the Knife
Room. 2:18 P.M. - 9:10 P.M. -- Speak to Anju while wearing Kafei's Mask to
make the appointment. 12:00 A.M. - 5:59 A.M. -- Meet with Anju in the
kitchen and mail her letter.
Day Two 6:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. -- Mail Anju's letter. 4:10 P.M. -
10:00 P.M. -- Talk to Kafei to get the Pendant of Memories 4:15 P.M. - 9:10
P.M. -- Give the Pendant of Memories to Anju. 9:10 P.M. - 11:00 P.M. -- Use
the crack in the wall of the Knife Room to listen to Anju's conversation with
her mother.
Day Three 6:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. -- Give the Pendant of Memories to Anju.
1:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. -- Go to Kafei's Hideout to get the Keaton Mask and
the letter. 7:00 P.M. - 12:00 A.M. -- Recover the Sun's Mask at Sakon's
Hideout. 6:00 P.M. - 5:59 A.M. -- Deliver Kafei's letter to either his
mother or the postman. 4:30 A.M. - 5:59 A.M. -- Go to the Employee's Room at
the Stock Pot Inn to receive the Couple's Mask.
XIII. THE SHORTCUT Whether you messed up in Sakon's hideout or
missed your appointment with Anju or you're just impatient and want to do the
whole thing as quickly as possible, this section is for you. It'll give
you step-by-step instructions on how to have Anju and Kafei wedded in the least
amount of (real) time possible. To make the whole thing go even faster,
let time flow normally instead of slowing it down with the Inverted Song of
Time. The Stone Mask will be necessary and the Bunny Hood would also be
especially helpful in cutting your travel time.
Day One 1. Play the Song of Double Time (press each note twice in
the Song of Time) to warp to 6:00 P.M. and talk to Anju while wearing the Kafei
Mask to make the appointment. 2. Wait until 11:30 P.M. Sorry, no
shortcut here. 3. Meet with Anju at 11:30, then play the Song of
Double Time again to warp to the dawn of the second day.
Day Two 4. Mail the letter. 5. Play the Song of Double
Time to warp to the night of the second day, and go into Kafei's hideout to get
the Pendant of Memories. 6. Give it to Anju.
Day Three 9. Play the Song of Double Time twice to warp to
the night of the final day and go to Kafei's room and pick up the letter from
the owner of the Curiosity Shop. You can do step 11 at this point if you
want, but you'll probably need to slow down time in order to make it. You
can skip this altogether if you already got everything. 10. Warp to
Ikana Canyon and sneak into Sakon's hideout at 7:00 P.M. (You'll have to use the
Stone Mask to avoid bumping into Sakon on your way there). Play
through the mini-dungeon. 11. Give Kafei's letter to the postman to
get the Postman's Hat or deliver it directly to Madame Aroma to receive the
empty bottle. You can skip this step too if you've already gotten both.
12. Go to the Stock Pot Inn and wait for Kafei.
Okay, you're done! Again. Hope you enjoyed it! Good luck on
the rest of your adventure.
Thanks Dhsu for helping gamers complete the Anju and Kafei sidequest, probably one of the most tedious parts of Zelda: Majora's mask. Dhsu is a respected member of my message boards for a year an a half now and has been a valuable asset to the community.
