YOU WANNA BE LIKE LINK?
Well, you played Zelda, and more Zelda, and so much Zelda that you think you could be the hero, Link, himself by now. Actually, with a little money you could look exactly like the Legendary Hero of Time and really impress your friends on Halloween. I, Video Gamer X, will not personally go to the extreme of actually dressing up like Link, and acquiring all his ammenities but this page is for that ULTIMATE hardcore Zelda fan that wants to actually become the hero of the game or at least acquire some of his goods.
First off, any good Knight needs a sword and shield. Preferably, you want it to look something like what is in the game. You can buy swords and shields (really cool looking ones too), but having them custom made will cost you a premium, so only do this if you have wads of money just lying around the house collecting dust.
The Average Price Range for a Sword is between $150 and $350 depending upon the intricasy and metalwork. Custom designed could run you $400 or higher.
The Average Price Range for a Shield is between $200 and $500 depending on the metalworking, engraving, heraldry, etc. Custom built could cost you about $700 or more.
I suggest these websites for swords, shields, and other heroic weaponry. You can also ask for a catalog to be sent to you if you wish from most of these businesses.
www.medieval-weaponry.com
www.armsofvalor.com - some really cool stuff including Fantasy swords and weaponry
www.rivendel.com/~shark/ - according to the site they take "special orders"
To really look like Link your going to need his clothes. You could make his tunics yourself or if you know a seamstress, but most likely you should leave it to experts. Your local party shop or costume imporium may be able to accomodate your order.
A really good costume could end up costing you between $100 and $200 if done professionally depending upon the quality and difficulty. Expect to pay extra for customizations and embellishings.
Check you local Yellow Pages for a store near you or you can go to these websites.

To enhance the realism of your look then you will have to lengthen your ears to points with "Spock" like pointy ears or elf ears that can be obtained from any party or costume shop. These should cost about 5 bucks, possibly 10. You will also need to dye your hair blonde (if it isn't already) and allow it to grow to your shoulders in the back and parting it down the middle. You will have to pierce both your ears and put two small hoop earrings in them. The hair dye should cost about $7, and the earrings about $1 or $2 unless they are going to be real gold, then the price for them would be substantially more. You will also need a pair of white tights and leather medieval looking boots (In my opinion the tights are entirely optional). A pair of Brown Timberland Hikers could suffice, but that is up to you.
To immerse yourself deeper into the role of Link, you need his equipment. Some stuff will be easy to get, for instance, go in your backyard or the backyard of someone with a tree and break a rather straight branch off that's approximately 1 inch thick and a yard long, you now have a deku stick. For some Deku-Nut look-alikes you can go to your local grocery store and pick up some walnuts for a few bucks and put 'em in a cloth bag, with of course some smaller nuts (Deku Seeds), but common old acorns you find on the ground would work just as well. To shoot the Deku Seeds you will of course need a slingshot. You can either make one out of a Y-shaped stick, some large durable rubber bands or straps, and a small square of leather or you can buy one. You may be able to find one at your local toy store or a small arms store, or you can visit this website that sells slingshots.
www.outdoorworldca.com/products/slingsht.htm
The average price for a slingshot is about 10 dollars varying from place to place.
Most likely there are no stores that sell actual real boomerangs in your town or city, but I've combed the internet and found some proprietors that sell professionally made or hand-crafted boomerangs. Check these out for some cool 'rangs, a must have for any Hylian reinactors.
users.aol.com/vbluestar/Bluestar.htm - some really nice stuff, hand-crafted and custom designed.
www.eql.com/au/sw/boom/boomer.htm - buy direct from Australia. G'day mates!
Boomerangs range in price from 15 to 60 dollars.
Now for the Megaton Hammer. Go to your local hardware store or home improvement center and go to the tool section. Find the biggest sledgehammer you can find. One with a 10 or 15 pound head (the bigger the better) and a wooden handle should suffice. One of these cost's about 19.95, maybe more or less depending upon where you shop. You now have a "megaton hammer."
The next item for you quest will have to be Link's bombs. Now, in light of current events (i.e. Colorado Massecre), I, Video Gamer X, in no way, shape, or form suggest that you construct any kind of incendiary device (bomb) that could cause severe damage to property or people nor do I advocate the purchasing or possesion of such devices. I think some rather harmless firecrackers would provide the ample effect for this item creating smoke and sparks for any Zelda reinactments. If you really do buy these, and you are a minor, make sure your parents are around to supervise your use of them.
In Zelda 64, Link uses an Ocarina to play magical songs. As far as I know you just can't pick up an Ocarina at your local Wal-Mart, but there is a website where you can buy hand-crafted ocarinas from a guy who makes them and even has one that looks exactly like the Ocarina of Time. He even provides lessons/sheet-music on how to play the songs from Zelda 64! That is awesome! This is a must have for any ultimate Zelda fan.
www.songbirdocarina.com/catalog.html - cool idea! Affordable prices too.
Bow's, Arrows, and quivers, can also be obtained from most of the same places that sell weaponry, sporting goods, and/or hunting equipment. Arrows can be simple to plastic feathered to real reathered with Native-American style Barb points or bullet-heat style. Bows can come in many different shapes sizes and functions. You may want to check out you local Army/Navy store or gun shop for this item. There are also special shooting ranges made just for archerers.
Bottles and jars can be as simple to obtain as washing out an old jelly or applesauce jar and taking the label off. Just for the fun of it why not put a bug, a fish, or a some red liquid in it.
What would Link be without his trusty fishing rod. There are many types of poles and rods, some for streams, lakes, and deep sea. An average fishing pole requires you to have line, a hook/lure, and a sinker. These can be obtained from most of your major retail stores like K-mart, and Wal-Mart, as well as sporting/outdoor equipment stores. Poles range in price from $20 to $100 depending on size, strength and quality of the reel/bail. Be warned spin-casts tangle easily. If you going after big fish remember to use higher test line (this is directly related to thickness and tensile strength) as to not have it break while realing in that Hylian Loach. Lures can range in price from 1.99 to $7, or $8. A small bag of hooks costs about 1.49, sinkers about 20 cents, and bobbers, about 1.99 a bag. If you really want to take up the sport than you can buy a bait bucket, tackle box, fishing jacket, net, and well...a boat. Here's an odd thought, imagine going to your local fisherman's pier dressed up as Link. That would definitely turn some heads.
Indeed, if your really want to fulfill the role as the Legendary Hero, then this page could be a guide on how to do it. While developing this page I thought about how easy it actually would be to make an ameteur movie about the Legend of Zelda with a camcorder and all the stuff listed on this page. Heck if I had the right capital, some college computer effects engineers, and an actor willing to play the part I could direct the independant film about Zelda, but of course that will never happen but it makes you wonder doesn't it. Wouldn't it be cool if Zelda was a movie? I heard a very unfounded rumor that there was going to be a movie made of the game, but that was never substatiated. I know Final Fantasy is getting a movie (this one's a solid fact folks) that should debut in 2001, why not Zelda? Maybe some genus, CEO in Redmond, will propose the idea to a director (I personally think Stephen Spielburg would be perfect) and have the movie made. Perhaps in the future I will talk further on the subject. I hope you enjoyed this page for what it's worth, and may the way of the hero lead to the Triforce.
