LETTER OF THE MONTH - JUNE

The following letter is very moving, and reflects entirely the feelings of an older gamer who can remember the early days of gaming and the fun times as a child associated with Zelda. I too, can look back retrospectively at the carefree days of my youth spent journeying on a new quest found only in my video games, and experiencing my dreams and imagination's manifold desire become real. The following letter is a moving heartfelt outpouring of remeniscent emotions regarding that feeling we get when we remember our pasts. Thanks Chris for sharing your thoughts, and congradulations on LETTER OF THE MONTH. (It's not easy to get!)

You say on your Video Game Midi page that the secret of Mana theme almost brings a tear to your eye as it reminds you of a lost time when care free fun was all you knew. I can definetely relate to this statement.

As a matter of fact, whenever I load up your page and that overworld theme begins to play I get the same feeling. It reminds me of that Christmas when I was in second grade back in 1988 when I opened up my presents and got not only a nintendo but also The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, a game which still is in my room to this day and gets a respectable amount of gameplay for a game which I have long since discovered all the secrets in. It reminds me of when I used to live in my old neighborhood growing up and before I had to worry about the opposite sex, paying bills, my future, taxes and a number of other things in life which while are necessary for freedom I would like to trade them all in for the days when all that mattered to me were when the next video game was coming out and when summer vacation started. I now am going to college, and soon will be making my living as an infantry rifleman in the Marine Corps (only to pay for a college degree in computer science) and needless to say my life has changed. It sometimes does almost bring me to tears when I think of the first time I played my Zelda II game, and how times have since changed. I long for times when games where about a boy picking up a sword and going on a quest for a princess , or about a plumber from brooklyn becoming a hero and saving a princess in a magical world, not today when games are all about having real stats behind the names of athletes today. I mean I get into sports as much as the next guy, but when was the last time that a truly catchy original idea hit the video game scene? If you think about it most video games today are just sports games with better graphics than the one released the previous month, or sequals to games whose original ideas were thought of in the 1980s. Think about it, you have Mario, and Zelda, ever since then the only original ideas have been Sonic The Hedgehog in the late 80s/early 90s which has since been dropped, and the only really recent one is Crash Bandicoot, and Im sorry to the good people at Sony, while it is a fun game, it does NOT even compare with the Ambiance of Zelda. I am sure that as I get older, and my life begins to get more complicated, when i do have the chance to look back at my old games, I will feel even more sad. The thing that does help me to go on is the slight chance that when I die, there will be another opportunity to live a carefree life in a simpler time.

It is good to be able to tell that others feel the same way as I do in a longing for simpler times. I appreciate your time reading this letter, and I would like take this opportunity to thank you for making such a great page for Zelda fans everywhere.

Sincerely,
Chris
