If you thought OOT was buggy, you ain't seen nuttin' yet!! I've seen
some reviews that call MM relatively glitch-free, but obviously they
haven't done much ofanything in the game. It's near impossible to get
through the whole game and not run into one or two (more?) glitches along
the way. Here's ALL I know in the world of MM Glitchdom:
ESCAPE CLOCK TOWN AS DEKU
This allows you to leave Clock Town as a Deku, which can be real handy at
the start if you don't want to be limited to Clock Town. What's even
BETTER is that this glitch does NOT require Crooked Cartridge AT ALL! Go
to East Clock Town. Approach the guard blocking the exit, and work your
way to the left side of the exit. The guard naturally moves to stop you,
but you should notice a little bit of space. Here's what you do: Face
away from the guard, hold Z, and run backwards, trying to fit through the
space between the guard and the wall. It may take a couple of tries, but
you should eventually hear Deku Link running real fast and slowly seeping
through the opening! Once done, you'll find yourself in Termina Field
uncontested!
DISAPPEARING ITEMS
Go to a postbox in Clock Town. Before checking it, make sure Link has
some C item out (hookshot, bow, Great Fairy's Sword). While Link's
holding the item, check the mailbox, then try to send the item you're
holding. The mailbox will refuse, then you should notice that the item
has VANISHED, and you can STILL use the invisible item! The effect with
the Hookshot is quite bizarre. With the bow, it looks like Link's
throwing arrows instead of shooting them. The Great Fairy's Sword can be
swung, and all you'll see is the swoosh it makes. Real cool!
CIRCUS LEADER'S MASKS
You can earn the Circus Leader's Mask as many times as you want! All you
have to do is go back in time, then return to the Milk Bar and replay the
Ballad of the Wind Fish. Gorman will keep giving you the Circus Leader's
Mask every time you do this!
STOP ANIMATION OF INSTRUMENTS
While a Deku, Goron, or Zora, hold L while playing your instrument to
stop the animation.
DEBUGGER IN MM?
You may have already heard this, but I'll state what I found. While
checking message boards I noticed a topic that someone created trying to
figure out why his game doesn't like him. He thought the spontaneous
freezes were caused by overheating, so he moved the N64 off the carpet.
Then, a few days later, it crashed on him again, with an odd screen from
the Song of Soaring. Meanwhile, someone who was messing with Crooked
Cartridge said he got the same screen when it crashed on him! Now here's
what puzzles me the most: Once I was playing OOT and had the game freeze
on me spontaneously (since then, it has been a chore to get it working
right). A yellow line appeared, the same yellow line CC enthusiasts hope
for when getting at the debugger. I put in the code (somehow I
remembered it, even though I never used CC in my life!) Sure enough, the
debugger came up. Conclusin? Though I never saw the
Song-of-Soaring-screen-freeze myself, I have a hunch it is Debug-related
because of the similarities with OOT and my experience.
KAMARO'S MASK HEART PIECE DUPLICATION DOESN'T WORK!
I noticed on your site someone saying that you can earn the Heart Piece
from the Rosa Sisters upon wearing Kamaro's Mask as many times as you
want. THIS DOESN'T WORK!! Take it off your site IMMEDIATELY!! I played
the dance song several times for the fun of it while waiting for the
Curiosity Shop to open. Only 1 heart piece! Sorry!
A GLITCH FROM THE GOOD OL' DAYS
There is at least one OOT glitch that survives in MM. Hold Z and take
out the Hookshot. Let it go, then quickly press R. Now release R, then
release Z. If done right, the beam from the hookshot will still be
visible, even though Link's holding it by his side.
EXPLORE MURKY WATERS AROUND ZORA CAPE FREELY
Please note that this ONLY works in the section of Great Bay with Zora
Hall and Lulu. By forming icebergs with Ice Arrows and hopping on the
water as Deku Link, you can explore the murky waters freely without being
sent back to shore!
MUSIC AT NIGHT
After beating Snowhead, go to Goron Shrine at night, then come back out.
Notice that the overworld theme music is playing AT NIGHT!! If you stay
in the vicinity of Snowhead, the music will continue playing through the
DAWN OF THE nth DAY message! If you go to Termina Field, it's past 12AM,
and you head near where Kamaro is, the theme music will start coming from
Kamaro instead of the normal dancing music! When you leave Kamaro, it
goes silent, but when you return, you an continue to hear the theme
music! Weird.
SWIM IN AIR AS ZORA LINK
This is tricky, but it might be useful. Go to Great Bay and head (for
example) to the spot in the second region where a Like Like comes out of
the water near the shore. Kill this Like Like, then walk as Zora Link to
the spot where it was. As soon as Zora Link starts swimming, press A and
direct Zora Link to shore. Then, quickly press A a second time and head
out to sea. If properly timed, you can get Zora Link to swim in the air,
but to stay in the air you must keep tapping A (holding it down will
cause Zora Link to glide into the water again).
OCARINA SOUNDS LIKE A GUITAR
As Zora Link, go to the guy in Zora Hall that's sound-checking. Play a
note, then, after the too soft/too loud response, take off the Zora Mask
and play the ocarina. Sounds like a guitar now, doesn't it? I believe
you can do the same trick with other instruments as well (that is, have
Goron's drums sound like a guitar).
LOUD DOOR OPENING SOUND
Do that same sound-check and get the guy to raise the volume. Now go
straight to a door (like the Zora Shop) and open it. The sound of the
door opening will be very loud.
ENTER SAKON'S HIDEOUT ON ANY DAY
Go to Sakon's Hideout, and notice the crack that surrounds the door. On
the RIGHT side of the door, you can sneak through the crack by either
rolling at it or by putting on the Bunny Hood and simply running at it.
You must try to steer Link towards the left as he goes through the crack;
otherwise, you may fall into an oblivion and be sent back to where you
entered Ikana.
Once inside, you'll find the hideout empty on the first two days.
However, you can do some of the rooms of the hideout with this trick:
Step on the switch, then wait until the conveyor belt starts. Step off
the switch, then back on (to make sure everything will go ok). Now
switch to a Goron and try to roll through the door before it closes. If
you're not fast enough, the door will crush you and send you outside the
hideout as normal Link. Once in the room, however, you can move a block
onto the switch. This will activate a familiar cutscene, then place Link
back on the first switch! (Don't ask me.) Now go to the first room on
Link's side and kill the Deku Baba. Though you can do another Goron Roll
to get back to Kafei's side, the last thing you can do is step on the
switch to open the next door. Notice that the Sun's Mask isn't moving
down the conveyor belt either! Interesting...
Enter on the Third Day and Kafei will be there, with the Keaton Mask on
(assuming you didn't do anything on the sidequest). You can do the whole
ordeal as normal, then watch Kafei leave the hideout roughly 5 hours
after everything started.
If you enter the hideout at night of the second day, do the first two
rooms (the last thing you do is kill the lone deku baba in the first room
on Link's side), then wait until dawn, Kafei will suddenly appear. Link
will be repositioned on the switch, and he'll be asked to step on the
switch even though he's already on it! This sets up a nice little
scheme: Do another Goron Roll to get into Kafei's side of the hideout,
then step on the appropriate switch. Kafei will take control now, and
you can use pots to kill the two Deku Babas. Link will now be doing
Kafei's part of the hideout, and Kafei will try to do Link's. I never
managed to make it all the way through, but I have heard that doing so
will not trigger the sun's mask sequence and you'll be stuck in the
hideout.
USE FIERCE DEITY'S MASK IN SAKON'S HIDEOUT
The Japanese version had at least 2 glitches allowing those players to
explore Termina as Oni Link. Both of those were fixed in the US version.
HOWEVER, one glitch with a similar result still remains! Based on
accounts from overseas, however, it doesn't look like the glitch works in
European (PAL) versions of the game, which may in turn indicate that
later US versions may also have it fixed (too bad). Anyway, here's the
working glitch:
Enter Sakon's Hideout on day 3 (either through the sidequest or through
the glitch above), then have Link put on the Bunny Hood. You can use
other non-transformation masks EXCEPT the Keaton Mask, but since this
glitch was discovered with the Bunny Hood, that's how I'll present it.
Proceed through the hideout, then at some point, while controlling Kafei,
pause the game and switch the Bunny Hood with Fierce Deity's Mask (remind
you of an old-time bottle glitch?) When Link resumes control, he will
put on the mask, transforming into Oni Link!! Now finish the hideout
(that's imperative), then jump into the river that flows through Ikana
Canyon. Swim downstream and the river should dump you into the Southern
Swamp. From here, you can go to Termina Field, Clock Town, or wherever
you want within your limitations. Be careful not to talk to any Bomber
kids or shop owners, for that will endanger freezing the game. Most
other characters are OK to talk to, however.
To take off the mask, find some deep water (like the pool near the desert
region of Termina Field, or the water found at the bottom of the Clock
Tower). Put the Zora Mask on a C button, then jump in the water. The
Zora Mask should become available. Use it to transform out of Oni Link
and back into a normal form.
ONI LINK'S SWORD VANISHES
Remember that trick to make items disappear in mailboxes? Well, once you
have Oni Link, go to a mailbox and try to mail the Great Fairy's Sword.
Surprisingly, Oni Link's sword disappears!!
THREE WAYS TO FREEZE SAKON'S HIDEOUT
(Note: All must be done on the third day.)
1) Take out the hookshot, hold that C button down along with Z, then
sidestep onto the first switch in the hideout. Game will freeze when
control returns to Link.
2) Upon entering the hideout, go through the first door (before anything
happens), then immediately take out the Ocarina. You must press that C
button at just the right time or it won't register. Success in doing
this will result in a game freeze.
3) Use the trick to put on Fierce Deity's Mask, only using the Giant's
Mask instead. Link will try and fail to become Giant Link, freezing the
game with a rather neat visual effect.
(Note: If you have no magic or have the Lens of Truth on while doing
trick #3, the game will repeatedly buzz at you, no cutscene plays, and
you can still move around but not use any items. If you get out of the
hideout under these conditions, Link will take off whatever mask he had
on, and the game will continue normally.)
SEE INSTRUMENTS IN FIRST PERSON VIEW
This only seems to work as a Deku or Goron, not as a Zora or normal Link.
Take out your instrument, press B to put it away, then QUICKLY press CUp
to go to First Person mode. If you were fast enough, the instrument will
still be visible as long as you're in First Person mode.
DELAYED REACION TO DOOR CRUSH
In Sakon's Hideout, position either Link or Kafei under a door, then wait
until the Sun's Mask falls into the pit at the end. The doors
immediately close, but the cutscene plays normally, with a rather odd
view of Link/Kafei. When the cutscene's over, the scene will then freeze
out (if Link was crushed, you'll hear him scream), then you'll be outside
as normal Link.
STEP ON THAT SWITCH!!
You know how if you speak to Kafei in Sakon's Hideout, he says to Step on
that Switch? Whether you're in the first room or in the last room?
Well, use the Goron Roll to sneak to Kafei's side of the hideout while
he's there. He'll still say the same thing -- STEP ON THAT SWITCH!!
There's no switch here to step on! You have to use the Song of Soaring
to get out, of course.
FALL THROUGH STAIRS
I don't know if you already know this or not, but if you go to the
100-rupee chest in East Clock Town on the buildings, then jump right at
the stairs that lead to South Clock Town, more often than not you'll fall
right through. Once I did this and landed on the stairs normally, but
all other times Link went through them.
ITEM MAYHEM
Meanwhile, back in the Hideout (Sakon's Hideout), there's one more oddity
to reveal. If you're normal Link when control switches to Kafei, all C
icons are disabled. But, if you're some other form of Link, the icon
availability will remain the same, and the B button icon will be blank.
You can't use items, but you can do something odd with this effect:
Pause the game and switch two items, like the Ocarina and Hookshot, that
have different availability status (one's enabled, the other's disabled).
The C icons remain the same, even though the items switched! (In other
words, the Ocarina will be incorrectly disabled and the Hookshot
enabled.) This is fixed when control is resumed by Link, so you can't
use this to use an item in the wrong form. Too bad.
MISSING PUNCTUATION
While fooling with the Sakon's Hideout glitches, I noticed that when the
Sun's Mask falls in the pit and Sakon says "Yes!! My security system is
impenetrable", there's a missing period/exclamation point at the end of
the dialogue. No big deal, right?
