PLAYING ZELDA 64 THE HARD WAY

I've got to hand it to this gamer, he reminds me of well..., me. T-Dog's "Crooked Cartridge" allows you to circumvent some of the game's obstables and skip the programmed requirments to progress further i.e. having the Kokiri Sword and Shield and makes for a weird way to play Zelda without the items. This also boosts the challenge by making you complete tasks or fight enemies with Link's other items. Playing the game like this really tests your patience and ability. I've done it and gotten pretty far, and wandered in all of Young Link's dungeons with no sword, or no sheild or both. I figured someone else would try this sooner or later, and this gamer has described in detail, I guess you could say, walkthrough of playing the game with no sword and shield. He also points out some things I didn't notice when I played the game like this.

First, you need to do the T-dog crooked cartridge trick. This trick involves pulling up the left side of the cartridge to cause the graphics and sound to slightly corrupt, allowing you to escape the Kokiri Forest. I'll start by saying that you should start a new game and save RIGHT before the moment you want to leave. You may need to try a few times (It can easily crash doing this). I kept forgetting to save, so I had to watch the intro over and over! Anyway, passing Mido seems to be a bit easier than passing the forest exit guard. I left just to see it hapen with no shield or sword. I went to the castle with nothing but the ocarina. I talked to Malon, Tallon, moved the boxes, got into the castle and met Zelda! Hehe! When she asks if you have the Kokiri Emerald, you don't, except the game wasn't programed to let you escape without it, so she won't believe you. You must lie to her and say you have it to continue, though you don't. Get the letter and follow impa out after learning Zelda's lullaby. Return to hyrule market and buy Deku Nuts and Deku Sticks (cause you can't get them free for the first time without the sword, you must buy). Get a heart piece (the lady and her dog for example). Leave the market and head for Lon lon Ranch. Grab the heart from the tower and get the bottle from Talon and speak with Malon to learn Epona's song. Head to Kakariko Village and open the gate to Death mountain. Return to the Market after speaking to the guard and get the Keaton Mask to him. do a few things there. Get the second Bottle from the Chicken Lady. You can get the Hylian shield by going into the Graveyard. If you are fully stocked on Deku Sticks/nuts, you can go to the royal tomb. Target the bats one at a time with a deku nut in hand. when it get's near, stun it and hit it with a Deku Stick (or if you time it right, just hit it with the stick only). After the bats are dead, dodge the Zombie guys and learn the Sun's song. exit and head up death mountain. You can get another heart by backflipping off the ledge wher you drop the bomb to the dodongo's cavern. There are a few things here and there to do here. Go back to the market some time and get the Skull mask. You will discover you need to talk with Saria and Learn Saria's song to go any further. You need the Deku shield (of course, you can always find some flaming bats to burn it up to get rid of it, if you like! Hehe! :) My best recomendation is to head back to the Kokiri forest. Save before going in and after to prevent a possible crash. It'll let you in, but not out, so after buying a shield, you need to save and do the Crooked Cart trick again. I would highly recomend entering the deku tree now. Instead of CC trick out the exit, CC trick Mido and get into the Deku tree (Here is why you NEED the Deku Shield). (NOTE: If you have done enough, Mido may have left the Deku tree to sulk in his house, in which case, you won't need to CC trick him to access the Deku Tree). When you enter the tree, you climb the vines and enter the only avaliable room. It has a Scrub, and the Hylian shield smashes the nuts. To beat it, you use the Deku Shield and then enter the next room, and get the sling shot. Leave the tree (save the level for later, if you realy get bored). I personaly left the web on the floor, cause I want to take screenshots when my video card arrives. Leave the Deku tree and return to the forest. You will be blocked by Mido from the BACK side!!! He'll still not let you through, thinking you are outside trying to go in. To get past him, you can either save and reset (SAVE is crucial or you return to the Deku Tree), or you can CC trick Mido to let you out. After you escape, with all items (so far, Ocarina, Decu Seeds/Slingshot, Deku Sticks, Deku Nuts, and the two shields (STILL NO SWORD!!! :) and head for the lost woods. Shoot the Bullseye to get the Deku Seed upgrade (you WILL need it later to reach Zora's Domain with no sword). Procede further and stop at the forest stage. Wear the Skull Mask and get the upgrade there. Procede to the Forest Meadow. There is a big old wolf, but it only took 2 hits (I think i used the Deku Sticks) to beat it and open the gate to the maze. I was suprised! Here is where hearts and the Deku Shield help. The little scrubs are a pain without them. Use the Deku Sticks or the Slingshot to take them out. Meet Saria and learn Saria's song.

--- !!! SARIA'S CLONE !!! ---

Now that you know Saria's song, you can now see Saria's Clone! Because you have not completed the Deku Tree, and Saria is "Supposedly" waiting by your House. Remember when she ran up to you in the begining and stood there. Normaly, she would say you should head to the Deku Tree, but now she says "When you want to hear my voice, Play Saria's Song. You can talk to me anytime..." phrase. If you play Saria's Song infront of your house, she says "I don't mind talking to you using the Ocarina's magic, but I'd really like to talk to you face-to-face!".

Also, In the begining, when you first leave the forest, she "Jumps" from in front of your house to the bridge, but the phrases are not changed.

--- BACK TO GETTING TO ZORA'S DOMAIN WITH NO SWORD ---

After you have Saria's song, you can Talk to the Skull Kid and give him the mask. He'll pay you. and all that stuff. Play the songs with the other Skull kids to get Rupees and a heart! You'll need to escape the forest now, so you need to CC trick the Kokiri guard in front of the exit from the forest. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE cause it could crash when you do the CC Trick (by now, Saria should be both at her stump in the Forest Meadow and in front of your house, and saying the exact same things, and Mido should NOT be guarding the Deku Tree anymore. You should also know 4 songs by now). Exit the forest, being careful not to pull the cart too far.

Head back to the Goron Town and speak to Darunia. Play Saria's Song and get the goron Bracelet. You now can lift bombs and pull grass. The ability to pull grass will help you a bit more (more items avaliable instead of just tiny rocks, you don't need to buy as much now). You can now open the Goron Store (drop a bomb flower over the ledge), open the path to the lost woods (no more CC trick needed to escape the Kokiri Forest, you just go through the Goron/Lost Woods path!!! You can also blow open the big Urn type thing if your timing is unbelievable. Here is where you get to have some fun. I know it ain't perfect (the stupid bosses won't die without the sword!!! AHHHHH!!!) but you can complete the Dodongo's Cavern with NO SWORD and be able to even reach the King Dodongo (the boss). I tried to kill him by just using bombs and bomb flowers. Unfortunately, navi says he'll eat anything, feed him a bomb and then she says use your SWORD (she colors it and everything). It appears the stuppid thing won't die withouth the sword, but you can realy make him uncomfortable with the bombs!!! I recomend saving and quitting. You won't loose a life and you start at the entrance to the level. Tips... To beat the Lizalfos (Lizards), target and use Sling shot and Deku Sticks. Shield when they swing at you. Enter prepared!!! In the rooms with bats, use your seeds sparingly. Save sticks for toughewr enemies. In the room with the medium Dodongo that breath fire... Forgettem!!! You don't need to kill them to unlock the door!!! Just light the decu stick and ignite all the torches. That opens the door. Save your stuff. Remember, you have no sword,a nd all your items are limited. You must make do with that you bring and what you get inside the cavern!!! It REALY adds challenge to the game!!! Although you can't beat the boss, you can battle him till you get bored or you loose your life. I recomend saving and quitting though instead of letting yourself die. I have 000 deaths and I'm in Jabu-Jabu already!!!

Speaking of Zora's domain, now that you have bombs, you can head there and blow up the rocks blocking your path. there are 2 hearts you can get as well as the magic beans, Enter the falls using Zelda's Lullaby, and get the heart by lighting the torches. Talk to King Zora and get the Silver scale. Head to lake Hylia and grab the bottle, make a scarecrow song! Hehe! So, so fun!!! If you try fishing though, you CAN'T!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!! NO FISHING!!! Apparently, when there are no items equipped to B as a kid, the fishing won't work! Bummer! Well, after you return, you can use the bottle to get a fish and enter Jabu-Jabu. GREAT FUN!!! (:

You can have a lot of fun doing this. It's realy a challenge to play some of the levels with no sword. It is possible to get all the needed weapons without beating the bosses. Doing this with no sword adds challenge!!! I wish the bosses could be beaten with no sword, but I think it's necessary. Bummer huh! I was VERY suprised!!! The giant Octorock guy can be beaten with no sword. Infact, it only took 2 hits using Deku Sticks to kill it!!! WOW!!! I'll never use the sword on him again!!! Hmm... Wooden stick, or sharpened sword, and the stick WORKS BETTER!!! Weird!!! It is a true shame you can't beat the bosses I'll try with the deku sticks, but I'd be suprised if it works, but considering!!! Believe me though, the challenge of merely getting as far as possible is SO FUN!!!

Thanks goes to Richard Piotter for describing his experiences of playing the game with no kokiri sword, this should give a lot of people something to do. There are in fact variations to his procedure that I've done and tried. In fact, crooked cart allows you to get past the boulders blocking Zora's River before you have bombs, it also allows you to get past the boulders blocking the warp to the Lost Woods in Goron City without bombs. I tried getting past the Door of Time with Crooked Cart, but to my dismay no luck! You can also skip getting the kokiri emerald and focus on getting the other two first, but he said you have to get the sword to beat the bosses, but I found a Deku Stick works nicely, hmm...different carts maybe. As a matter of fact they only took a few hits if I remember correctly. Really, playing the game without a sword toughens things up, add to that the potential of going back to where you started after a game crash if you forgot to save your game prior to a Crooked Cart attempt and you've just upped the challenge considerably. This is extreme gaming as slick as it can be.
