AUTHORS NOTE:

This is BEFORE the time frame of Zelda 64, when Link was still a baby. It is a story about the War before, and the main character is a man called Ronwir (pronounced RON-Were) and how he helped save Hyrule's Only Hope for the future.....

(P.S- It's even before Zelda's dad was king!)

Ronwir held his breath skillfully, his strange, grey eyes flickering through the leaves of the tree. He slowly drew his bowstring back to his eye, then let it go flying. He was rewarded by the cry of a Gerudo, who fell in her tracks and was trampled on by her marching companions. Instantly the horde stopped, milling around and muttering anxiously. Ronwir chuckled drily. Now that they had stopped, he could count how many there were. The Hylian muttered to himself, "Hmm. The whole force's loose." He leapt soundlessly to the ground, then dodged and ducked through the rocky terrain. He paused, cocking one long, pointed ear as he heard the Gerudo Army continue their march. Ducking behind a large boulder, he drew his well-oiled and silent bowstring back and let it fly. Ronwir twanged the bowstring, lauging silently as another shriek pierced the air.

One less Gerudo to plauge the land!

Darcula, the Goron King, watched his son and future King play with other young Gorons. He turned back to Ronwir, a frown upon his face as he threw a large pouch full of money to the Hylian, who caught it skillfully. He spoke in a thick, bass voice. "Here's your wage. How many did you say again?"

"A full army, about 1,200."

"Coming where?"

"Up the South Pass, so they wouldn't have to deal with the Hylians and Shiekahs in Kakariko Village, I wager." Danwir answered with one of his dry chuckles, which Darcula frowned at.

"I don't trust ether one. Get out of my sight, spy. I don't want young Daruna to be plauged with nightmares after seeing you!" Danwir chanced a quick, side-ways glance at the hefty Goron guards advancing, then turned his sight back to the huge Goron King. Danwir gave one of his eloquent bows.

"Your wish is my command, Oh Great One!" Turning on one heel, Danwir walked silently out of Darcula's throne room. Darcula turned to the Goron Guards.

"Don't let him out of your sight untill he reaches the end of the Trail!"

Danwir chanced a look back and saw the young guard. Slipping behind another one of the huge boulders that littered Death Mountain, he lay in wait. The young Goron came soon enough, blundreing a bit noisily as he tried to catch sight of the hylian he was supposed to follow.

"Hmmm, he must be here somewhere. I just saw him a minute ago. Wow, I never remembered the trail to be so slippy. I guess I should go back and tell Dar...."

Danwir rolled the heavy and lifeless body of the Young Goron over the mountain. As he sauntered off, he twirled his bow and sang an old song, taught to him by his mother;

"A spy's work is never done,
Oh me oh my oh no,
They spy on races,
one by one,
alayleehe ayo.
Craftier than Gerudo,
more stronger than Goron,
spys track and kill as well as both,
more skillfully than some!
Oh, I'm a spy,
yes, that be me
alayleehe aylaylo!"

Danwir tapped on the closed door, singing softly; "Oh mother shiekah,
Brave n' bold,
can come in your house,
A Warrior cold?"
A voice answered him, though more sure and louder;
"If that be who I think it be,
then let your face be shown.
My house is yours; come in, be fed,
just don't eat us outta house an' home!"

Danwir swung the door open, grinning as he bounded up to the short and oddly dressed woman who was bent over a stove. He lifted her up and swung her around as the woman protested loudly.

"Put me down, 'y hear! You'll wake up my liddle Impa!" It was a statment uttered too late, because just then a sleepy little girl stumbled out of the other room. As soon as she saw Danwir, her eyes went wide with delight as she rushed over to him, jumping up and down eagerly.

"Uncle Danwir, wadga bring me? Wadga bring me? Put down Auntie Irath an wadga bring me?"

Danwir oblidged, ruffling the young and imaptient shiekah's hair. "Now, you just calm down a bit while Uncle Danwir catches his breath! Whew, y' must've gained a few pounds last time I was here, Auntie Irath!"

Irath shook a ladle at the grinning Danwir threatingly as she chewed him out.

"I wouldn't be talkin', y' great foodbag! You must have gained 100 pounds with the roast cukkoes I gave you since you last came here! I aught too....Good Triforce, Let the goddesses preserve us!" Irath gasped as she saw Danwir pull out the huge bag of rupees, then she started berating him again.

"Where did you steal that! Tell me right now, or I'll blister your hide and throw it in Lake Hylia for the fishes to eat!"

Danwir chuckled, then quickly remembered about Impa. "Now, young Impa, time for you to scoot on back to bed! Here, take some of this with you."

Impa eyes grew big as she grabbed the 20-rupee piece, then ran into her bedroom, yelling, "Thank you, Uncle Danwir! I'm gonna go to bed now!", and she shut the door. Danwir turned back to the angry Irath.

"Killed some Gerudos for Darcula. The normal stuff." Irath sighed. She had tried many times to talk Danwir out of selling his services, but it always fell on deaf ears. Danwir was like a son to her, like Impa was a daughter. She rose and went into her own room. "Well, you can stay up as long a y' please, dinner's where it's always been. You can leave whenever you want." Irath knew that it wouldn't be long when Danwir would move on. In fact, it was the next day when Irath woke up to a half full cuboard and the bag of rupees.

Danwir had moved back up the trail, though traveling cautiously. Then, he heard what his straining ears had knew would be there; the sounds of mourning after a battle. Ducking and weaving up the mountain, he was greeted with a gerudo body. The further up he went, the more bodies he saw; then he came upon the battle field. Gorons were going through the graveyard, then a cry was taken up.

"Darcula is slain! Long live Big Brother Daruna!" That was all Danwir needed to hear. He slipped from the site, leaving the sceen behind him.Danwir traveled down the South Pass, whistling his spy song when he felt a cold blade against his throat. Looking around suprised, Danwir caught glances of blood covered Gerudos with blades drawn, and he gulped as the one in front of him pressed her blade harder, drawing blood.

"You will pay for killing one of us!"

Danwir looked weakly up at the one ray of sunlight that shined through his cell. Staggering to his feet, Danwir paused as the clanking of his chains echoed through the long, cold hallways of the Gerudo fortress. He had thought long about escaping, but even with all of his skills he was brought back. The last time was truly his last try; now he could barely move, chained to the wall in an even tinier cell. Clutching the bars, Danwir managed to painfully pull himself up and look around. There was the usual guard; all else was quiet.

"It must be night" Danwir muttered wearily, and he winced as he was immediatly prodded with the sharp scimitar of the guard.

"Quiet, you! Nabooru comes!"

Nabooru had recently come in as second-in-command, and she was still quite young. She nervously figeted as she tried to order the awaiting guard.

"Um...er...Yes! Um...could you let him out, um..please?" The guard looked increduously at the young gerudo. "Let him out?" Nabooru gazed at the floor.

"Um...er, yes! I've been thinking...um,..we should let him go. He's been good 'n....'n stuff, so we should give him an escort and let him go." Nabooru finished in all a rush, red starting to flush her face. The guard stared a while longer, then turned and opened the cell. Without anything to hold on to, Danwir fell forward. The guard waved her scimitar threatiningly at Danwir as she unlocked his chains. "Hold still! You have been decreed by the Great Nabooru to be let free! Thank her right now!"

Staggering to his feet, Danwir mearly nodded his head at the nervous girl. The guard dealt him a hefty blow, and as pain coursed through Danwir's head, blackness enveloped him. Nabooru started chewing her nails.

"Oh my!"

Danwir turned his face to the wind, gasping as he let the cool, sweet wind rush over his face and blond hair. The gerudos who had escorted him gave him back his bow and a quiver of arrows.

"You have learned your lesson; never come this way again!" Danwir watched as they turned and started galloping back on their Gerudo horses. Quick as a flash, he pulled out an arrow, fitted it on his string, and let it fly. He saw a gerudo drop, then sent another one running as an arrow hit the other's horse.

They had learned their lesson!

Danwir traveled slowly, finally reaching Kakariko village on the third day of his freedom. He trudged up the stairs, and as soon as he turned the corner, an awful sight greeted him. A ful fledged battle was going on! The zoras had attacked! Danwir stood there, shocked to see half of the village in flames. A young woman clutching a small bundle stggered out from the fray and fell, wounded in a dozen places. Danwir helped her to her feet, and a small cry came from the bundle, which was a baby wrapped tightly. The woman's face was black from the smoke, and she gasped hoarsly, "Shelter! Help me and Link!". Danwir quickly lifted the young woman in her arms and fled from the village, a band of zoras close behind. Glancing back, Danwir saw that they were quickly gaining ground, suprisingly quick for water dwellers. Turning his back, he saw a groove of trees up ahead, with a small tunnel leading in. The zoras were now almost upon them, and Danwir saw no alternitive. He shoved the woman and her small bundle into the tunnel, shouting after her, "Run for it! Don't stop!" Danwir fitted an arrow to his string and let fly an arrow. They suddenly stopped; turned and fled. Danwir stood, chest heaving, in the small inlet turning wearly, he made to enter the tunnel. Emerging on the other side, he the woman now bieng attacked by two warriors that were fearsome skeletons! Suddenly, Danwir felt a voice in his head, a voice that made power corse through his viens.

"You must save Link!"

Flexing his worn and aching muscles, Danwir hurled himself at the two creatures, an arrow in each hand. He knocked them sidways, onto the forest floor below. Scrambling to his feet, Danwir yelled to the woman looking over the edge.

"Run for it!"

He turned just in time to see the skeleton's sword gleam as it sliced through the air. Danwir had a brief glimpse of Impa, grown tall and muscular, just like he had hopped that she would. She nodded; mouthing only two words;

"Thank you."

And his curious gray eyes closed forever.
