UNSOLVED MYSTERIES
Updated 3/1/99

Once you complete and master Zelda: The Ocarina of Time you will be left with many unsolved mysteries that remain in the game without any solution or resolution. I can't understand why these are here, and can only conclude that there are environmental/plot hooks for add-on quests for the 64DD. Miyamoto said that these were embedded into Zelda for use with that peripheral when released, but as far as I know there is not going to be a 64DD in rest of the world except Japan, so what's the point of releasing a game with no way of solving it completly (or getting the Triforce for that matter). Anyway, this page is intended to point out all the loose ends that Zelda 64 never ties up after all possible ways of changing the circumstances are exhausted. If I do solve any one of these the solution gets posted on the Top Secret Page, or it will get its own page. Since this page was put up I have had many questions about where I solved the SOLVED mysteries.

The Strange Hole in Zora's Domain - When you are young Link go to Zora's Domain and just past the ladder take a look underwater at a very deep part that seems to go to an opening. If you try to dive this far you will come close to the opening but won't make it. Where does this go? You can't get there with the Iron Boots because Zora's Domain is frozen over when you're an adult. Some have said you would need another item such as a mythical platinum scale to get down there. Sorry, but no such item is in the game so we're left with this mystery.

UPDATE: Sorry the mysterious hole proved to be a polygonal glitch that looks kind of like a cave but isn't. Using the Iron Boots as young Link proves this with a Gameshark Code. Here's an easier way if you don't have the Gameshark. Play the Diving game and wait until just before the timer reaches zero. Stand on the land right above the hole. Jump just before it reaches zero and you will fall all the way to the bottom.
UPDATE: You can also get there with the GO BELOW ZORA'S ICE trick.

The Two Lovers - In Market, when you are young Link, and in Kakariko when you are adult Link you will find two Lovers that dance eternally. In fact the only way to get to them as adult Link is in a round-about way through the Potion Shop, up the ladder and onto the landing behind the windmill. What purpose do they serve in the game?

Mysterious Conspicuous Boulders - As adult Link, when you are near the lovers you will see a boulder next to the windmill. Lift it and there will be nothing underneath. In Hyrule Field there is a kind of crossroads of paths there is a boulder nearby. Pick it up and find nothing underneath. What is the point of these rocks.

UPDATE: Some of the boulders in Hyrule Field have poes near them, same too goes for a couple of the walls. This still doesn't explain the boulder in Kakariko near the windmill with nothing underneath.

The brick walls in Hyrule Field - What are these for? I've walked all over them and found nothing. There's a really high one adjacent to Lon Lon Ranch in the west near the entrance to the Gerudo Valley. As far as I can see they make poor decoration so there must be some other purpose.

UPDATE: The Brick Walls kind of form the image of a face on the map at the lower right corner of the screen. Perhaps this is intentional or a trick of mind and perception.

Zora's Frozen Domain - It never unfreezes even after you remove the curse after completing the Water Temple. No, Blue Fire DOESN'T work as many suggested.

UPDATE: Contrary to what some would have you believe it is impossible to unfreeze Zora's Domain as adult Link.

The statue above the gate to Hyrule Castle - It tells you the time like a Gossip Stone, but does nothing else. What's its purpose?

UPDATE: Still unsolved.

The Hand Drawn Triforce In the Poe Man's Room - It just right there staring you in the face. A programmer trick or meaningful? All you get from that guy is a bottle when you find his big poes anyway so what connection does he have to the triforce. Is he somehow a mutation of the soldier that was in that room as young Link? It would seem so.

UPDATE: The "Poe Man" is still mysterious. Perhaps he was turned evil by ganon's magic or allowed himself to be turned evil. Just read his message as child Link about wishing there was more choas in the world and you will understand what I mean.

Odd Opening Melody - Ever notice that the melody at the beginning of the game is the same note configuration of the Warp Whistle from Super Mario Bros. 3. Has anyone figured out what notes on the Ocarina these are?

UPDATE: The Opening melody is actually the flute sounds from the first Zelda game as well as the flute from Super Mario Bros. 3. Interesting.... Perhaps this is some kind of nostalgic throwback to earlier games, or a clue about something. Still unexplained fully.

The Hyrule Running Man - Maybe its just me, but I have found no way to beat the Hyrule Running Man. Has anyone else? He always beats me by one second.

UPDATE: According to Nintendo there is no way to beat the Running Man. Is this true. Some have suggested using the "Swordless Link" trick to be able to use Farore's Wind to warp to the Kokiri Woods, but I've tried and this doesn't work.

Extra Chambers in Hyrule Castle - Through the window Zelda is standing in front of we can see a room, the throne room perhaps. Never get in there though, do we?

UPDATE: Gameshark's Moonjump Code shows this is nothing important.

Strange Unreachable Part of Hyrule Field - Just to the west of The Market/Hyrule Castle (Ganon's Castle) area is a oblong area that Link must walk all the way around. I've bombed it, poked it, played songs in front of it, hammered it, shot it, and just about everything else possible that might reveal a hidden passage to no avail. There is no way in. That area has been bugging me since day one. On the map it's a rather conspicuous area, but there is no access to it.

Mysterious Hole in Darunia's Throne Room - I don't think anybody's seen this yet, but I discovered that if you look just right at the ceiling in his throne room you will see a rectangular passage. Very Odd.

The remaining Masks - The Gerudo, Goron, and Zora masks do absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. No one will buy them. All people do is say strange comments that seem to rotate from character to character depending upon the mask. Putting these masks on seems pointless. - SOLVED! 1/9/99 See the Top Secret Section for details.

The Girl Chasing the Chicken - As young Link there is a girl in the market chasing a cucco. It's impossible to catch the cucco like all the other ones.
UPDATE: This could just be part of the circumstances of the hustle and bustle of townsfolk life. She never does catch the cucco though, nor do you.

The drawings on Links Tree House - There seems to be a dinosaur and a stick man with a shield and sword with perhaps a sun or object hovering in the sky. Purpose? For decoration or a secret?

UPDATE: Some have suggested that this is an image from one of Link's premonitonal dreams. He may have drawn it on the tree to represent those images. This could also be an instance of scenic foreshadowing of a future fight with Ganon or perhaps Dodongo.

Melody at the End of the Game - At the very end of the game, if you leave it on for awhile, a melody will play, it should be the melody you played to the scarecrow during the game. Why is this here? As far as I can tell the Scarecrow's Song doesn't reveal anything that special.

What happens to the Saria - Didn't Saria really like Link? She seemed real sad when he left the Kokiri Forest. And Mido said that she missed Link. A true chivalrous hero would never leave a damsel in distress.

UPDATE: Saria does become the sage of forest, but there is no other information provided regarding her future and connection with Link.

Zelda's "Yes" or "No" choice questions - When you first meet Zelda she will tell you things and ask you if you agree, believe her, etc. It seems that answering "No" to her questions doesn't do anything like get you kicked out or something similar. Remember the Yuffie thing in FF7, it just reminds me of that in a way. A secret, probably not, but rather pointless nevertheless if nothing results from it.

UPDATE: Just keep saying No and you will have to eventually say yes, although it is kind of funny to contradict what the storyline wants to happen.

The greater puzzle of the chicken in the Windmill - If you've read this site well enough you would have learned that it is possible to get into a hidden corridor inside the windmill with the Longshot. Now the thing of this is, by the time you are able to get to the hidden area in the windmill then you already have access to the other rooftops in Kakariko so using to the cucco to drift onto a roof would be pointless, and since you can't get in there as a kid, then what is the point of having a single cucco up inside the Windmill? - SOLVED! 1/10/99 See WINDMILL CUCCO SOLVED for something else to do with the cucco although it is probably a game glitch.

Too many Rupees - There are so many ways to get rupees in Zelda 64 that it is beyond reason. I never run out of rupees, and besides there's nothing really to buy with them. Some of the things you purchase are downright useless. A poe in a bottle worth 10 rupees to the Poe Man - C'mon If you get all the Gold Skulltulas you get a stupid Gold Rupee. Oh big deal, I say. So what you can keep going back to get more gold rupees from the guy. You never use 'em for anything. At least in A Link to the Past it took a long time to get rupees to buy something like the Zora Flippers let's say. Potions were more expensive too. On that note it brings me to...

UPDATE: There are still too many ways to get rupees in this game. Makes it way too easy to get items. Rupees were hard to come by in other Zelda's like the NES's Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past.

The Uselessness of Potions - I never used a single green potion thoughout the game. I used a red one once, and a blue one once just to see what it did. If you catch a fairy then you can let yourself be killed and then be fully revived to maximum hearts without a game over. What use would be the Red Potion? Even worse still is their so cheap to buy; 40 *ahem* rupees and their all over the place in shops and hidden caves. There's magic jars everywhere so the green one is pointless. Here's another related drink that is useless - milk. It may do a body good, but in Zelda 64 it only fills 5 hearts. Just "get fairy" instead.

UPDATE: Some have touted about how great the potions and Lon Lon Milk are, but I can't figure what these people are thinking when a fairy refills ALL your hearts if you die AND avoids a game over. To this day I never bother with the milk or the potions.

The Uselessness of Farore's Wind - It only works in Dungeons/Temples. I suppose it might help a really bad gamer who keeps getting lost or dying, but other than that I can't find a good use for it.

UPDATE: With SWORDLESS LINK you can use this item outside of the dungeons, but I doesn't really do anything that great.

The Ice Arrow - It's kind of hard to get, it freezes enemies, but other than that, it does nothing to reveal any secrets or uncover any mysteries in the game. Sure, I went and got it, and used it for awhile, but after that I wondered to myself what purpose would it play in the development of Link's quest.

The Pointless Rock in Zora's Fountain - If you get to Zora's fountain as Adult Link there will be a rock in middle near where Jabu-Jabu was. Climb the Log and get to a point where Navi flies over to the rock and turns green. Play the Scarecrow's Song and Pierre will appear. Hookshot to the Scarecrow and you will be on this rock. As far as I can tell there's nothing up there. Oh, and there seems to be a rumor curculating on the 'net about some secret way of finding a map that leads to the Triforce on that rock, and all I can say is it is total hogwash. There is NOTHING up there. I even went back there at night to double-check. Why have the scarecrow go here?

UPDATE: Yes I know there is a lousy red rupee up there. The only redeeming quality that going up there gets you is possibly a better view of that hole in the rock face where the invisible skullwalltulas and Gold Skulltula are. Totally dumb if you ask me, a waste of the whole TOP SECRET scarecrow's song.
