The Frugal Flyer
This site is devoted to my continuing interest in airplanes.
My earliest memories are of running round the yard, arms outstretched pretending to be a Spitfire, thumbs pointed forward, to simulate guns, yelling rat-a-tat-tat. After paper planes I moved on to rubber powered and simple gliders. By the mid 1940s I'd progressed to towline, free flight gliders and control line flying. Unfortunately I was never any good at the latter, as after a few laps I usually got sick. Following a period of domesticity I got back into the hobby, in the mid 70's, with RC Slope soaring. From there it was only a short step to RC, power and helicopters.
I love this hobby and through it have made many friends around the world. The purpose of this site is to share my experience in the hope that others will also come to enjoy this hobby as much as I.
In order to assist youngsters, I used to scrounge broken planes and parts from fellow flyers and remake into some sort of first trainer plane. I now make SPAD type trainers rather than patch up conventional models. These plastic marvels look better, less expensive, easier to build and maintain, and are tough. Fitting them out with a plane is not usually a problem. Getting the youngster an engine and radio is a much bigger hurdle.
