1. (poss. of Wm. JONES, bro. of Simon P. JONES as her father. Not Proven.) Lewis settled on 100/150 acres on the Cumberland River, where he went into the coal hauling business, taking coal from the land, down the river on a barge to Nashville, Tn. He was in this business venture with his brothers. Legend has it that he died when they pulled the barge in for the night and he built a fire under a rock overhang for warmth. When the fire heated up the rock, it broke, crashing down on him and killing him. Lewis came to Whitley Co. by Dec. 1823, from Chesterfield Co., S.C., with his wife Delilah, and his 3 sons and 3 daughters:

It has been said that 2 daughters of Lewis, (Mary Ann and Nancy) died as a result of child-birth related causes or illness's. Mary Ann was supposed to have given birth to a daughter called Jane, and died shortly after or during the birth, and Nancy died of childbirth related causes, also.

Census:
1850 - Whitley, Kentucky.  Shows William R. Steely, born in South Carolina, age 35, and Sarah, age 33.  Also shows Elizabeth, age 14; Delila, age 12; Celeter, age 10, Levi J., age 8, Simon C., age 6, Olive, age 4; Eli Newton, age 3, and William Gilbert. All children show born in Kentucky.

1860 - Whitley, Kentucky. Shows William R. Steely, age 45, born in South Carolina and Sarah, age 43, born in Kentucky. Also shows Simon C., age 16; Newton, age 12; John, age 5; William Gilbert, age 10; Sarah, age 20; and Levi J., age 18. All children show born in Kentucky.

1870 - Whitley, Kentucky, page 378. Shows Levi J. Steely, age 28 and Sarah, age 30, both born in Kentucky. Also shows J. J. C., male age 2; W. H. H., male age 9; Celeter, male age 7; Mary, age 5; and R. H. Jones, age 24. All children of Levi & Sarah show born in Kentucky.

Facts:
1) Russell Steely says the following about William Riley Steely's family records: "The information on dates, ages and identities came from the W. [illiam] R. [iley] Steely Bible. The vital statistics on those dying before maturity could not have been available from any other source. This Bible, in a remarkable state of preservation, is in the possession of Kenneth Steely, son of Audrey Steely, grandson of Reverend Charles Steely, great-grandson of John C. Steely, and great-great-grandson of W. R. Steely.

2) About Harrison Steely, Russell Steely says, "an appraisal of Harrison's personal estate is on file at the Whitley, Kentucky court house. This appraisal, made by a nephew, Levi J. Steely, and two brothers, William R. and John, included a fair share of the trappings of that time - guns, tools, etc. He also held several notes for varying amounts of money -- some evidently were installment-type loans, and in several stages of being repaid. Harrison seemed to be operating a bank from his hip pocket. The last known activity directly related to the Harrison Steely estate is recorded in a Master Commissioners Deed Book of Whitley County. The heirs appeared on November 8, 1890, to settle the estate. The heirs appearing were Mahala Steely, widow, Madison, Jane, Susan, Levi, Green, Harrison and Alay Steely. On the record and for the record, his property was sold for taxes and the buyer was Simon Steely and a brother-in-law named Smith."

3) Russell Steely states that "Levi Jackson Steely was probably the best known and most widely recognized of any of the Steelys to that time. He was a Baptist Preacher of note, having studied at the Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky. He was the first pastor of the First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Kentucky, and served as pastor of several rural churches. He was also a country merchant, running a store located at the mouth of Paint's Creek in the Jellico Creek sections."
