POEMS ABOUT GRANDPARENTS

Grandmother

Your sweet smile,
Your soft touch.
the advice that never hurt but healed…
You've made growing up easier.
You've taught me the most important things,
To live life fully,
and cherish those you love.

--Lisa Konigsburg

Grandmother

Grandmother you are like a patchwork quilt
So cozy and warm.
Just the smell of coffee
Reminds me of your wisdom and charm.
I know I can always come to you
When lost or alone.
For you always comfort me
And make me feel at home.
You are the silver lining of a cloudy day.
And I know whom can trust when clouds blow my way.
Grandmother, your hugs and kisses
Will be stored in my heart each day.

--Author Unknown

Grandmother Hugs

Grandmother hugs and Grandmother kisses,
Hot oven cookies and holiday wishes,
Attics with treasures of children grown old,
Stories of magic and princes so bold,
Oceans of patience and rainbows of love,
A bright ray of sunshine sent from above,
You stirred my childhood with rich, golden days,
Touching my life in so many ways.
When shadows are dark,
I reach through the night,
The love of a Grandmother shines like a light.

Grandma's Hugs are made of Love

Everything my grandma does
is something special made with love.
She takes time to add the extra touch
that says, "I love you very much."

She fixes hurts with a kiss and smile
and tells good stories grandma-style.
It's warm and cozy on her lap
for secret telling or a nap.

And when I say my prayers at night
I ask God to bless and hold her tight.
Cause when it comes to giving hugs
my grandma's arms are filled with love!

To Grandmother With Love

I had an angel here beside me,
Sent to Earth to help and guide me,
An angel always there for me
Sent to love and care for me.

She did the things that angels should:
She taught me what was bad and good,
She gave me hope when no one cared,
She held my hand when I was scared,
She cheered me up when I was down
(She could make a smile from a frown),
She doctored me when I was sick,
And many another angel trick.

Today my angel earned her wings,
Her halo, harp and other things.
But today I'm lost and all alone
For today God called my angel home.

Grandma

"While we honor all our mothers
with words of love and praise.
While we tell about their goodness
and their kind and loving ways.
We should also think of Grandma,
she's a mother too, you see....
For she mothered my dear mother
as my mother mothers me."

--Author Unknown

Grandfathers

Grandfathers are fathers who are grand,
Restoring the sense that our most precious things
Are those that do not change much over time.
No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
Far more inclined than most to grant the wings
Allowing us to reach enchanted lands.
Though grandfathers must serve as second fathers,
Helping out with young and restless hearts,
Each has all the patience wisdom brings,
Remembering our passions more than others,
Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.

--Nicholas Gordon

Walking with Grandpa

I like to walk with Grandpa,
His steps are short like mine.
He doesn't say "Now Hurry Up,"
He always takes his time.
I like to walk with Grandpa,
His eyes see thing like mine do -
Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud,
Half hidden drops of dew.
Most people have to hurry,
They don't stop and see.
I glad that God made Grandpa,
Unrushed, and young like me."

--Richard. E. Walker

GRANDPARENTS

Few can bring the warmth
We can find in their embrace,
And little more is needed to bring love.
Than the smile on their face.
They've a supply of precious stories,
Yet they've time to wipe a tear,
Or give us reasons to make us laugh,
They grow more precious through the years.
I believe that God sent us Grandparents
As our legacy from above,
To share the moments of our life,
As extra measures of His love.

Missing Grandma
by Tara

I have a grandma . . .
who hugs, kisses, smiles and says, "My, how you've grown" whenever she sees
me.
but not anymore . . .

I have a grandma . . .
who plays in the creek at deer camp and helps me catch Cray fish without
going eeewww.
but not anymore . . .

I have a grandma . . .
who can teach me how to play solitaire three different ways and not snitch
if I cheat.
but not anymore . . .

I have a grandma . . .
who tells the most wonderful stories, snorts when she laughs, and has a
joke with four punch lines.
but not anymore . . .

I have a grandma . . .
who comes to my tea parties, plays dress up and always lets me be the
queen.
but not anymore . . .

I have a grandma . . .
who drives a sporty purple car, very fast just to make me and my sister
laugh out loud.
but not anymore . . .

I have a grandma . . .
who has Alzheimer's disease, doesn't know my name or even say, "My how
you've grown" when she sees me
but she's not my grandma . . .

I want her to let my grandma come out to play.

Grandma
by Amanda

I remember
the green freeze pops,
hugs that never stopped!
The games of kickball,
the light left on for me in the hall.
The trips to the game farm,
the times you kept me from harm.
Whenever I needed you,
it was your shoulder I turned to.

The hospital care,
you in a wheelchair.
The feeling that you weren't ok,
the days you couldn't come out to play.
I was told on a cold winter day
that you had forever gone away.

The funeral room full of fears,
Grampa's eyes full of tears.
Everyone at my house,
there was no shoulder,
tears fell on my blouse.
The pain I felt,
all of it still I haven't dealt.

I wish I could've said good- bye,
maybe now I wouldn't cry.
I know you loved me,
why couldn't you stay?
I still miss you to
this day.
Grandma - I love you.

A Great-Grandpa To Me
by Frank Greg

This year would have been the first
that you could gladly say
how you'd become a Great-Grandpa
who's more proud everyday.
Though you've been gone
for many years,
still you're loved just the same.
Now my son will be
our legacy
because he also shares your name.
And as he grows
he'll want to know
just how you used to be.
So I'll sob then smile
all the while
that he's upon my knee.
I'll make it clear
how very dear
I hold your memory,
And hide the pain
as I explain
what a great Grandpa you were to me...

Grandfather
by Lyn

You stood by me through it all
You saw me stumble
You saw me fall
You picked me up and held me tight
In your arms the world felt right

You washed away my tears and fears
You walked with me through the years
You were there when my children came
You opened your arms once again
You showed them love - you showed them strength
You did for us at great lengths

What we treasure most of all
Is your love through it all
Your handsome face
Your big blue eyes
Your heart of gold eternal size

I miss your smile when I'm away
I think of you each and every day
My Love for you will never die
You are the apple of my eye

My Grandmother
by Shannon Vanderstelt

As I look into my Grandmother's eyes
I seem to feel a bit surprised
She sits there in her silly old chair
Clicking her heels, it's too much to bear

See she can't walk, sing, or speak
She is thin and looks very weak
It saddens me to see her so
That life has brought her to a terrible low

She can remember a little from the past
But the present goes by way too fast
She knows her daughter and sons you'll see
It's hard for her to remember me

I wish I knew how she was feeling
Maybe there are secrets she is concealing
I wonder what goes through her mind
As she sits there in a bind

Speak to me Gram; wake out of your trance
Please get up, move, or dance
I want to see again the sparkle in your eyes
Because I know that's where the truth lies

You used to sing the Gospel with this glorious tune
Tomorrow to hear you sing was never too soon
You saved so many lost souls everyday
Taught them about God and all he has to say

You were so strong, mighty, and bold
Your life was too short to already been sold
I miss hearing you sing and pray
The hours are cutting short, it could be any day

I want you back sound body and mind
I wish there were a key I could find
To bring you back out of this state
Oh why did this have to be your fate

This must have been God's very plan
To watch you grow and see your wings span
You've served him right from the start
He welcomes you to his home and heart

My love for you will never die
I will hold your Sparkle in my eye
I know I'll be singing with you someday soon
Walking through the gates of heaven,
singing the same glorious tune

Grandmother
by Judith Stafford

In the midst of towering birch trees; chill wind blew
off an icy lake. Did you know as you stood on hard
frosty ground, that you had discovered our sanctuary?
Did you perceive the scent of summers through the
antiseptic snow? Did you hear years of laughter and
wonderment inside those cabin doors? Did you look
past the rustic and the crude and see unrestrained grace?

I remember a dining table laid out with the finest
china and polished silver. I remember pot roast and
manners and decorum. I remember sitting on the dryer
in the laundry room; that gentle warmth rising; cloaking
us in humid comfort. I remember stories of mom getting
lost for hours, wandering in circles in the forest. I
remember testing it out for myself and losing my bearings
and how my heart would pound loud enough to drown
out everything except that one car engine that led to
the road and safety. I remember bear tracks and over
turned trash containers. And corn soaking in salt water.
I remember barbecue pits in the sand and a special bed
in a small alcove that always belonged to me. I wonder
how many other grandchildren can say the same?

These are the things that you loved and you showed
them to us and we loved them too. And these are the
memories that were yours and you shared them with
us and now they are ours. They are heavy in sight and
sound; in fragrance and sensation. They are your life
and our childhood. They are your accomplishments and
our inheritance. They are who you were and who we've
become. You fought against the coarser and baser parts
of our nature with a refining hand and a classic elegance.
We have always known this; always appreciated this;
always recognized we would be but shadows of ourselves
without this, but rarely have we dwelt upon the regal
influence that was your life.
