On graduating from
University College, Dublin, she worked on the Manchester Guardian and as a
governess in Spain. She returned to England. Her play Distinguished Villa
was well received in 1926, but she preferred the more solitary occupation of
novelist. Her first novel,(a chronicle of middle-class Irish life)
Without My Cloak (1931), won both the Hawthornden and James Tait Black
prizes. Its theme would be constant throughout her novels, namely the
sturggle (particularly the struggle of Irish women) for individual freedom
and love against the constricting demands of family, bourgeois society and
Catholic religion. Her main works: The Ante-Room (1934), Mary
Lavelle (1936), The Land of Spices (1941), Pray for the
Wanderer (1938), The Last of Summer (1943). Her most successful
novel was That Lady (1946), set in sixteenth-century Spain.

growing up in Switzerland, Meret Opeenheim traveled in Paris an enrolled at
the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. After meeting Giacometti, Arp, and Man
Ray, she became absorbed in Surrealism, first contributing her sculptures to
their exhibitions in 1933. At this point, many of her pieces consisted of
everyday objects arranged so that they had allusions to female sexuality and
feminine exploitation by the opposite sex. Oppenheim’s paintings focused on
the same themes. Her originality and audacity established her as a leading
female figure in the Surrealist movement.

first recognized star of Soviet cinema, famous theatre actress and a gifted
singer. She studied in Moscow Conservatory but did not graduate
because she had to work to support her parents. Orlova's performance in a
very popular 1934 comedy, Jolly Fellows, earned the young star the
sympathy of Stalin and the title "Honorable actor of Soviet Republic". In
the next years she played in many popular soviet movies: Circus
(1936), Volga-Volga (1938), Bright Path (1940), and Spring
(1947).

Elise
Ottesen-Jensen lectured for fifty years about birth control and sexual
questions. She fought against legislation with a zeal that gradually
overcame resistance in ever greater fields. In 1933 she took the initiative
for the National Swedish Association for Sexual Information (RFSU) and
twenty years later the IPPF was formed (the International Planned Parenthood
Federation) with Elise Ottesen-Jensen as the chairman for Europa, Africa and
the Middle East. A few years later she became the president. Three events
were of decisive importance in Elise`s life: she was hurt in an explosion at
a dental laboratory and several fingers had to be amputated; after a new
education she was drawn towards journalism mainly for the oppotunity to
reach many people with her protests against social injustice; her yungest
sister bore child out of wedlock and was labelled a "fallen woman". The cild
was taken fro the mother and many hardships led to her suicide.

Luise Otto-Peters
was one of the most important German feminists and socialists. However, she
had to publish her enlightenment-style writings about social poverty under
her pseudonym (Otto Stern). She was the publisher and editor of the
Frauen-Zeitung, which appeared for the first time in 1849. However, due
to the Prussian laws, it was prohibited in 1850. After that, she published
the Mitteldeutsche Volkszeitung with her husband, August Peters.
Together with Auguste Schmidt and Henriette Goldschmidt, she founded the
General German Women's Society in 1865, which she managed for three
decades. This association opened a Sunday school, a continuation school for
girls.

tej disciplini. Njun sin Voldemars je kot metalec kopja sodeloval na OI 2000
in 2004.

She was the first woman to throw a javelin over 61 meter. She won the gold medal in the

Voldemars Lusis, is also a javelin thrower who competed in 2000 and
2004 Summer Olympics.
