1998 - Bike-Aid 3,600 Miles Across The U.S.A.

1999 - The Great Divide Mountain Bike Expedition

June 21, 1998 - Spokane - Kellogg

DISTANCE TRAVELED: 79.60 Miles

TIME: 8:30 Hours

AVERAGE SPEED: 13.0 Miles/Hour

TRAVEL CONDITIONS: Bright sunny and hot.

ROAD CONDITIONS: Mostly smooth roads with some potholes and a few cracks in the road which got annoying since they occurred every 20 feet.

TERRAIN/DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Rolling hills and one 6-mile uphill with a 4-mile downhill. Overall a fairly moderate ride.

DAILY JOURNAL COMMENTS:
We woke up around 6:00 AM and ate a mix of Chex and raspberry granola. I then packed all of my gear to threw it into the SAG. We left around 8:30 and took a bike trail for about 35 miles(Picture9) before coming to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. We stopped here for lunch at a park along the side of a lake where some of us bought lunch and others ate their lunch that they had brought with them. We then brought out some watermelon which we had previously cut up.(Picture10) It tasted great and we then continued on our way on I 90 for about 20 miles while going up 4th of July Pass before coming to the next small town and getting off onto a very small back road which was much safer. We traveled on this road for many miles through pine trees and meadows.(Picture11) The ride was great and much better then the highway. We came into Kellogg around 5:30 and went to a nearby school to take showers before eating a dinner of three different types of spagheti, which tasted great after biking 80 miles. We then fixed up our bikes and went to a nearby place for a second dinner and to talk about what Bike-Aid has to offer. We stayed there until around 9:30 when we then took a trolley up into another local town called Warden which had a mine located at the end of a road which could be seen from the last house. We then also got to see the bridge that collapsed during the eruption in the movie Dantes Peak. We got back to the church around 10:30 and went to bed around 12:00 after watching In'n Out on a TV that we had in one of the rooms.

TRIP ROUTE:
Go down Washington until you reach a park and then take the bike path to the right for 35 miles. Get onto I 90 and follow east for 20 miles until you get to Red Lake where you get off of the highway and go towards Kellogg. Stay the night in Kellogg.
