August 11, 1999 - Del Norte - Rest Day

DISTANCE TRAVELED: 0.00 Miles
AVERAGE SPEED: 0.00 MPH

It had been planned that we would ride 38 miles up the longest and highest pass of the trip but it turned out to be a rest day instead! Scott set his watch for 6:30 but we slept on until 7:15. Scott took a shower but I still stayed in bed. I was about to get up but soon after he had gone outside, he announced that first, we had a rest day, and second that Ron was leaving the group. I got up, went to breakfast with everyone, and then said goodbye to Ron since he was going to ride the pass that we were supposed to ride. I went back to the room and took a shower before packing my grear to go to the town park where I would stay the night. At the park, I did a major cleaning job which included drying out my tent, rain fly, and tarp and then washing the inside of the tent since it had become sticky and had tons of dirt in it. After this, I dried out my sleeping bag and thermarest before riding to the laundry to wash clothes for the first time since Rawlings – 20 days ago! Later in the day, at 6:30, we went out to diner for pizza, which was followed by pie. We had heard that it would be the best pie of the trip but it was definitely not the best cherry pie I have ever had. The pie at Holland Lake was much better and I think that Pie Town would have had the best. After dinner, I rode back to my tent and fell asleep around 9:30.
