1998 - Bike-Aid 3,600 Miles Across The U.S.A.

1999 - The Great Divide Mountain Bike Expedition

July 1, 1999 - Basin - Butte

DISTANCE TRAVELED: 31.74 Miles
AVERAGE SPEED: 10.86 MPH

I woke up at 8:00 after having gotten 9 1/2 hours of sleep. I ate a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and then packed my things. I left the campground after Brian adjusted my gears and rode all of 1/2 mile before stopping for a second breakfast of 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. We finally left the restaurant at 11:00. For the next four and a half hours, we rode to get to Butte, Montana, or as Brian would say, Butt! We began on pavement, rode onto dirt, and then transferred onto the freeway around the Divide Crossing #4. (Picture44) The freeway was being worked on so it was very rough where they had ground down the surface. For about 5 miles, we rode on the road and it actually wasn't too bad since we got to ride on a section which cars were not allowed on. We had a long downhill which took us into Butte, and then we rode directly to the KOA. After setting up my tent, I took a very long shower and then washed my dirty clothes. After this, we sat around for the rest of the day eating chips and resting. Dinner consisted of salad, macaroni and cheese, and bread. Best of all, we had chocolate and coconut cream pies. They were the best deserts so far besides the huckleberry pie at Holland Lake. After dinner, we locked our bikes all in one huge mass in the middle of the circle of tents, since some had been stolen recently, and then went to bed at 10:30.
