November 2 Dia de los Muertos (All Soul's Day) Uruguay

Historic monument of Artigas in Plaza Independencia

Halloween esentially does not exist in Uruguay, it being more of a North American holiday. Dia de los Muertos - or "Day of the Dead" or All Saints Day - is the festival that really counts here. Schools, banks and most offices are closed, many shops, and even the post office. If the holiday happens to fall on a Thursday or Friday, many who can will make a long weekend of it. School holiday may be recognition of the inevitable low attendance. Here in Uruguay the Day of Deads is not celebrated, rather is a day of quiet respect for those who have died. Most of the day is spent visiting cemetaries and remembering relatives who have passed away.
