During March the Headquarters of the 10th was shifted from the US to India after Major General Lewis H. Brereton, who had arrived in India from the Netherlands East Indies on February 25th, assumed command on March 5th. The move was begun on March 8th and would not be completed until the following month. At the time of the change of command the 10th had 8 tactical aircraft (all B-17's) at its disposal. At this time the 10th began its first operations, transporting 474 troops and 29 tons of supplies from India to Magwe in Burma, and evacuating 423 civilians on the return flights to India. On March 9th the Japanese captured Rangoon effectively cutting off the Burma Road, thus preventing supplies from reaching China by land.
During March the following units arrived in India and were assigned to the 10th Air Force:
Headquarters 7th Bomb Group (H)
Headquarters 88th Reconnaissance Squadron (H)
16th and 25th Pursuit Squadrons, 51st Fighter Group
Headquarters 51st Pursuit Group
9th Bomb Squadron (H), 7th Bomb Group |
