KKSMKH "CYBERCLUB" 1999

NETWORKED ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

01ST MARCH 1999

The school Computer Club or better known as KKSMKH embarked on a slightly ambitious project this year....one that has been so far a dream to its Chief Advisor, Mr Tan Teong Lip....to provide Internet access to as many of its members as possible through system networking!

Owing to the country's economic slowdown, KKSMKH faced a serious lack of funds but Mr Tang Siew Liang, Head of the Vocational and Technical Dept. of the school, was kind & generous enough to offer his time, knowledge, experience and services to make this project of KKSMKH a reality and a resounding success. His expertise and help enabled KKSMKH to carry out the project within a very tight budget. It works, Mr Tang!!

The computer room of KKSMKH is now equipped with the following :

1. An Intel Celeron 300A server (protected by a PK Blackout Buster UPS unit) installed with a licenced original copy of a proxy server software and thus acting as a proxy server providing single line access to the Internet. This is an economical means of accessing the Internet by several computers through a single line modem...cheaper, feasable and practical!

2. A 56Kbps V.90 External Modem provides the important link to the Internet.

3. Four other computers, consisting of an assortment of Pentium 150, Pentium 133, Pentium 100 and even a 486 DX2-100 computers, are networked to the proxy server and acting as WIN95 Clients capable of accessing the Internet "almost" simultaneously!

4. An HP LaserJet 6P Printer, An HP DeskJet 550C Colour Printer, a Panasonic Colour-Capable KX-P2123 and KX-P1124i Dot Matrix Printers are all shared and accessible within the network.

5. An HP Flatbed Colour Scanner can also be found within the network.

As of now, KKSMKH can provide FREE Internet access to all members who are interested in surfing the Net, be it for research and knowledge or for fun!

KKSMKH has also started a special course on how to prepare HTML pages, etc should one be keen to set up one's own home page on the Internet. Response to this group has been overwhelming with only ONE place left....

KKSMKH wishes to convey its heartfelt thanks to Mr Tang Siew Liang, Mr Choo Chi Yen & Mr Woo Fook Keong (both former AJKs of KKSMKH), Tang Aik Meng of U6Sc3 (former Ketua PP of KKSMKH), Ivan Lim (present Ketua PP of KKSMKH) and everyone else who have so kindly sacrificed their time and energy to achieve this level of achievement in our efforts to provide the best possible IT facilities & knowledge to our members in line with the country's vision of an IT-literate and IT-inclined society.
