Two In One Hand
If your left hand drops while juggling four ball gap, you end up juggling two in one hand. All the throws are 4s from the right hand. The left hand is empty. This pattern is written:

Throwing hand: R L
Throw:         4 0

Or more simply as: 40

The average of the throws is: (4+0)/2=2. So two in one hand is a two ball pattern.

If you hold a ball in your left hand while juggling two in one hand with your right, you are juggling three balls! In siteswap a hold is represented by a 2. Therefore two in one hand, with the other hand holding a ball, is written:

Throwing hand: R L

Throw:         4 2

Or more simply as: 42

The average of the throws in this variation is: (4+2)/2=3. And sure enough it is a three ball pattern.

When a pattern has a 2 in it you can perform a fake (a fancy arm movement). For example the pattern 42 is used to juggle The Yoyo.
