"Pray, and make sacrifices often, for many souls go to hell, because they have no one to pray and make sacrifices for them."
Our Lady at Fatima: September 1917.

• Hell in the Mind's Eye -

To many this seems a hard saying: Deny thyself, take up thy cross and follow Jesus. Mt. 16:24. But it will be much harder to hear that last word: Depart from me, ye cursed, into the everlasting fire. Mt. 25:41. For they who now willingly hear and follow the word of the cross, shall not then be afraid of eternal condemnation.
-- Imitation of Christ, Bk. 2, Ch. 12.Proverbs 14

Heaven *  Heaven is spoken of as the dwelling of God; for, although God is omnipresent, He manifests Himself in a special manner in the light and grandeur of the firmament. Heaven also is the abode of the angels; for they are constantly with God and see His face. With God in heaven are likewise the souls of the just (2 Corinthians 5:1; Matthew 5:3, 12). In Ephesians 4:8 sq., we are told that Christ conducted to heaven the patriarchs who had been in limbo (limbus patrum). Thus the term heaven has come to designate both the happiness and the abode of the just in the next life.

• Hell - In many religious traditions, Hell is a place of suffering and punishment in the afterlife. Hell is endless or eternal. Hell is often portrayed as populated with daemons, who torment the damned. The Christian doctrine of hell derives from the teaching of the New Testament, where hell is typically described using the Greek words Tartarus or Hades or the Arabic word Gehenna. Hell is taught as the final destiny of those who have not been found worthy, after they have passed through the great white throne of judgment, where they will be punished for sin and permanently separated from God, after the general resurrection and last judgment.

The Fear of the Lord (Desert Fathers)

"My brother, wisdom is not found in much learning and many letters; rather, as the Holy Scriptures say, the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord, and prudence the desire of the Holy; indeed, it is good to know the law of the mind. This is correct, for faith in God engenders a good mind, and the good mind is a river of living water; he who has attained it will be filled with its beneficial and life-bearing waters.

"Neither wisdom nor prudence can exist where there is not fear of the Lord, because the wealth of wisdom is to revere the Lord, to whom belongs all glory." (Saint Ephraim).

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. -- Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. -- Psalms 111:10

“Only through suffering can you best carry out your desire to be a victim, and thereby help the work of priests.
Through your suffering you will gain more souls, than through the most brilliant sermons.”
-- Our Lord to Theresa Neumann, on April 29, 1923, date of the beatification of St. Therese of Lisieux.

Greater love has no one

God needs our suffering, to be used by virtue of the Communion of Saints, to assist other souls in their redemption.

God sends the heaviest crosses to those He calls His own,
And the bitterest drops of the chalice are reserved for His friends alone.
But the blood red drops are precious, and the crosses are all gain,
For Joy is bought with Sacrifice, and the price of love is Pain.

Story of Peter d'Airelle

March, 1913 Dear Father: This time I can write you only a few lines in pencil from my bed. Mamma has gone to Mass with Jack and Odette. I cannot go to Holy Communion today, and sometimes I am afraid I shall not be able to receive Our Lord again. I am all alone in my little blue room. After Communion last Friday it seemed to me that Jesus was saying again: "Little Peter, would you like to die to convert Daddy?" "Oh! Yes, yes!" I cried. Then I asked Our Lord to let me suffer very much for Daddy's sins. After school that afternoon, I vomited blood. The next day and the day after I did it again. The doctor came. When he had left, Mamma kissed me and cried. Then she told Jack to begin a novena with her for my recovery. But I do not want to get better. I want to die, in order to see Jesus and convert Daddy. I am suffering a good deal, but I do it gladly to convert the sinners, as Our Lord did. Please pray for me when I am dead. May we meet again in heaven. -- Your little Peter March, 1913 Dear Father: It's me again. But I can't write any more. Jack is writing this letter for me. -- See complete booklet Little Peter available free from Atonement Booklets.

• The Holy Fear of God -
• For the unbeliever, the fear of God is the fear of the judgment of God and eternal death, which is eternal separation from God (Luke 12:5; Hebrews 10:31). Proverbs 1:7 declares, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” Until we understand who God is, and develop a reverential fear of Him, we cannot have true wisdom. True wisdom comes only from understanding who God is, and that He is holy, just, and righteous. The fear of God is the basis for our walking in His ways, serving Him, and, yes, loving Him.

• St. Augustine bids us. He says: "Let us go down to hell
while we live, that we may not have to go down to hell when we die." If we go
and look at that terrible prison, where those who commit mortal sin are
punished, we shall be afraid to commit mortal sin. If we do not commit mortal
sin, we shall escape eternal death, and possess eternal life for ever.

• 'The more the wicked abound, so much the more must we suffer with them in patience; for on the threshing floor few are the grains carried into the barns, but high are the piles of chaff burned with fire.'

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Doctor and Father of the Church
• 'A multitude of souls fall into the depths of Hell, and it is of the faith that all who die in mortal sin are condemned for ever and ever. According to statistics, approximately 80,000 persons die every day. How many of these will die in mortal sin, and how many will be condemned! For, as their lives have been, so also will be their end.'
