He gave her one of Beck's demo tapes. It was a Maxell Normal Bias UD 90min cassette and had a ton of cool songs. Upon her giving the tape to him, it was decided to seperate it into two parts, because most of the songs were acoustic and solo Beck songs, and a handful were metal songs featuring a band. The two CDs he called "1992 Demos" and "Metal Demos" and were shared only between a few friends. They promised not to ever share these special demos, but one day in need of some cash, notsaved's buddy sold a copy of the acoustic songs (1992 Demo) on eBay (he did not include or mention the metal songs). This copy was bought and became traded as "Buck Fuck Iowa" by the infamous Eddy Z. More appropriately, though, the demo is commonly referred to as "1992 Demo." It is 15 songs and usually circulates as mp3, though many serious traders do own lossless CD copies which have no traceable lineage. In Januray 2006 notsaved announced in a torrent comment what he had, and asked for someone to "convince" him to seed it, and I took steps right away to do so. Knowing full well of my record for helping to seed old Beck demos, he sent lossless copies (CD >> EAC >> CD) of both discs. I shared the metal songs with almostaghost so that we could figure out what the songs were and come up with appropriate names. The following parapgraphs are a summary of our observations and results. Most obvisouly, a full band is playing here, not solo like the rest of the demo. Secondly, a few songs are related to other songs. Notably the third song is a metal version of Trash Can from the acoustic demos. It also has more lyrics than it's acoustic counterpart. Also, in the fourth song you will the phrase being screamed: "Backwash mother." This is very interesting because Beck has played a live song which has come to be known as "Backwash." A low quality recording even exists of him performing it on June 21 1995. According to the "Beck! The Setlists" page the setlist for this show listed the song as "Backwash Mother." This brings us to the most interesting note about these songs. Several if not most of the song appear not to be Beck singing. Only a few seem to be obviously Beck. A close listen reveals that several of these songs, if not most, appear to be sung by Steve Hanft. This is not unsual since Beck and Steve were/are good friends and had in fact played together in at least 2 bands: "Liquor Cabinet" and "Loser." That said, it should be noted that there is no way at present to verify any of this, this is just the result of some educated guessing performed by me and almostaghost. I believe that at least one or two of these songs have some background vocals by Beck. It would be reasonable to assume that Beck is playing guitar on most or all of these songs. I am currently in the process of contacting some people who may be able to lead me to more information on the band "Loser" to see if we can match any of these songs to that band. Any new information about this demo will be posted (as always) to whiskeyclone: http://whiskeyclone.net/ in the almostaghost section. If you have any info on it please contact me breathmint@hotmail.com or almostaghost (see whiskeyclone). That's the story, and so please enjoy for the first time, a complete and lossless copy of "1992 Demo" with a lineage traceable from Beck >> You ! ---------------------------------------------------------------
