314 John BRISCOE, b. Mar 1717, St. Mary's Co., MD, s/o Philip and Elizabeth (_____) BRISCOE (see 628), d. 7 Dec 1778, Berkeley Co., VA, m. (315) Elizabeth Harrison MCMILLAN (see 630), b. May 1730, Prince Williams Co., VA, d/o Capt. John and Ann Francis (HARRISON) MCMILLAN, d. 5 Jul 1774, Berkeley Co., WV. John BRISCOE, m. 2nd., 27 Mar 1776, Ann LAMAR, of Queen Anne Co., MD. There was no issue to the 2nd. marriage, and she died in 1812, d/o John and Susannah (TYLER) LAMAR. Ann was the aunt of John BRISCOE Jr's. wife Eleanor MAGRUDRER. Dr. John BRISCOE was a physician who migrated from St. Mary's Co., MD, to the Valley of Virginia as early as 1743, and was an early settler of the valley in Frederick Co., VA, later Berkeley Co., VA, now Jefferson Co., WV.. In 1747, a road was laid out from Winchester to his home. Along with Morgan Morgan and Mr. Hite, they were responsible for building the first church edifice in the valley. He was the presiding Justice of the County Court in Berkeley for a number of years. He built 'Piedmont' near Charles Town, WV. In 1782-1787 Dr. John was taxed on 1 pole 19 slaves in Berkeley Co., VA. In the Berkeley Tax Records, he had 7 blacks over 16; 7 blacks under 16; 6 horses, 12 cattle, was exempted because he had a physician's licenses In his will, probated 20 Jan 1789, he names wife Ann, and sons Hezekial, John, and Parmenas. His son John was the executor of the will. It was witnesses by Sarah Slaughter, Elizabeth BAKER, and Frances Davis. The estate was inventoried on 20 Dec 1791 and settled on 12 Oct 1812. Several of his children moved to Nelson Co. and other counties on KY, probably because John BRISCOE entered 2000 acres of land in northeast Nelson Co., for military service during the Revolutionary War. He gave civil service during the war and was active in organizing the militia, and at one time was an active surgeon for the company. 314.2 Parmenas BRISCOE, b. 1 May 1749, m. Ann BRISCOE, d/o Gerard BRISCOE. Parmenas BRISCOE  sold to Hugh Holmes, Winchester, VA, for $2265, 1/4 part of a tract of land in Frederick Co., called 'Cloverdale' containing 434 acres on the death of the late Gerrard BRISCOE, dec., , to the heirs of Nancy BRISCOE, dec., also 1/4 interest in slaves Pompey, Samuel, Venas, Emily, Warner, and Phillip; the date was not included. Parmenas received 400 acres on the south side of Long Lick Creek and 400 acres on Long Lick Creek, Nelson Co., KY for War service. No date present and it is not known if this was service in the Revolution or the War of 1812. In 1792 Parmenas appears on the Nelson Co., Tax List with 1 white over 21, and 400 acres of land. On 8 Nov 1796, Parmenas BRISCOE sold to Gerard BRISCOE of Frederick Co., VA, for 600 pounds, nine negroes and livestock. On 10 Oct 1797, Parmenas sold to James Speed, of Mercer Co., KY, for 401 pounds, released all lands titled to James Smith, James Barbee, and Lewis Craig of Mercer Co. On 3 May 1797 Parmenas vs. John Thurman in covenant by consent continued to the next court; continued again on 6 Jul 1797 and 7 Sep 1797, and on 2 Jan 1798 the plaintiff paid the cost of the continuance, eventually Parmenas was awarded 359 pounds 6 shillings and 8 pence, since Thurman did not perform the covenant. On 26 Jun 1817, Parmenas witnessed the will of Joseph Enlow. On 7 Sep 1824, Nicholas CRIST was issued an administrative bond as administrator of the estate of Parmenas BRISCOE, for $2000, with Henry Crist, Absolom FROMAN, and Frances C. 314.3d Ruth 'Ruthy' BRISCOE m. 21 Apr 1795, Nelson Co., KY, by Joshua Carman (or Coleman), Nicholas CRIST Jr., d. c1815/16. The bond for the marriage was on 18 Apr 1795, bond by Stephen BRISCOE, with consent filed by "Parmena" BRISCOE the mother of Ruthy. Ruth's mother was named Ann, and somewhere in the translation the gender of Parmenas her father changed. Nicholas was issued an administrative bond for $2000 as administrator of his father-in-law Parmenas's will on 7 Sep 1824. On 13 Sep 1802 he was guardian of Gerrard BRISCOE'S infant heirs, the bond issued in the amount of $30000. (KYNEB2, 7, 10 v2p24, v3p24) Children:

314.2j Gerrard BRISCOE d. by 13 Sep 1802, Nelson Co., KY. Gerrard lived at the head of Lick Creek 26 Apr 1790. On 11 Nov 1798 Gerard BRISCOE vs. William Hardin, the court ordered a survey of Hardin Co. controversial land, in which the sheriff was to attend to remove force if any was applied. On 11 Nov 1799 Elijah Craig vs. Gerrard BRISCOE on caveat, was dismissed. On 12 Nov 1799 Gerrard was assessed 7 pounds 5 shillings 10 pence for not performing a caveat to John Thurman. On 7 May 1799 Permenas BRISCOE in chancery, defendant motion to dissolve complainant's injunction continued to the next court; the court ordered a survey on Jefferson Co., land, with the sheriff again to attended to remove any force. On 13 Sep 1802, a guardian bond was issued to Nicholas CRIST Jr., as guardian of infant heirs of Gerrard BRISCOE, dec., in the amount of $30000 with Adam Shepherd, Adam Guthrie, and Jacob Crist suretors. 314.3 John BRISCOE, b. 2 Jul 1759, d. 12 May 1818, m. 19 Feb 1784, Frederick co., MD, Eleanor MAGRUDER, b. 6 Jan 1766, d. Tue, 11 Mar 1806, Jefferson Co., VA, d/o Alexander and Susan (LAMAR) MAGRUDER, d. 11 Mar 1806. Eleanor was interred in the family burial ground.. In 1872-1787, John paid tax on 1 pole 8 slaves in Berkeley Co., VA. John was taxed on 9 blacks over 16, 9 blacks under 16, 9 horses, and 12 cattle in the Berkeley Co. Tax Records. He was Justice of the Peace in 1774 and 1798. An Obituary for Eleanor stated that on 28 Mar 1806, Mrs. Eleanor BRISCOE, 43, d. Tue 11th. inst., consort of John BRISCOE, Esq., of Jefferson Co., leaves 8 children and husband. Interred in family burying ground. Sermon by Rev. Mr. Collins. Ann LAMAR who m. 314.3c3 William D. (DARKE?) BRISCOE b. 21 Sep 1832, VA, d. 20 Apr 1906, m. c1866, Eva G. _____ (Evelyn in 1870 Census) b. 17 Mar 1848, d. 4 May 1924. In 1870 he was living with his brother Frederick A. in Grant Twp., Jefferson Co., WV, with his wife and daughter, Evelyn. In 1880 he was living in Charles Town, Jefferson Co, with his brother Frederick BRISCOE, Betty Cecil 22, a teacher in the household. In 1900 there were 2 black servants in the home: William Laury 20, and William Blackburn 22. In 1910 Eva has 2 black servants in the home: Allen Burns and Hattie Ransom 16. In 1920, she has her daughter Louisa, and a servant, Philip Parsons in the home, and she was living in Ransom, Jefferson Co. In 1850 Elen is living with her mother in Jacob P. ENTLER'S hotel in Shepherdstown. Warner is buried in Zion Episcopal Church  in Charles Town, Jefferson  Co. In 1850 Elizabeth was living in Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, with 2 daughters. In 1860 she and her daughter Ellen are living in Jacob P. ENTLER'S hotel in Shepherdstown.
