The Family of Francis HAMILTON and
Susan ______?z
(8th. Generation)

158Francis HAMILTON, m. (159) a Susan or a Margaret. In the 1820 Jefferson Co., Census, there is a Susan HAMILTON, living alone, age over 45 years. Francis HAMILTON lived in the area near Shepherdstown, his lands situated along the Potomac River. It must have been pretty close to the river, for James Rumsey stored his steamboad in HAMILTON'S cellar. In the trial run it was Francis HAMILTON who was at the helm of the boat. Francis was in Frederick Co., VA by 1740, according to a deed cited in Bushongs, History of Jefferson Co. What is unclear, is if this is Francis HAMILTON above, or his father. Francis above died probably after 1800 in Jefferson Co. If he were in Frederick Co., VA, in 1740, this would put him in his eighties by 1800, not uncommon, but a pretty advanced age in the late 18th. century. He left a will, but unfortunately it is was recorded in one of the lost books of Berkeley Co., VA(WV). However, in a court suit involving North vs. the heirs, all of the heirs of Francis HAMILTON were listed. The other information about the family has been gleaned from the will of Francis A. HAMILTON, a grandson of Francis HAMILTON, who died in 1822, in Frederick Co., MD, and the relationship he describes. In 1782-1787 he paid tax on 1 pole 5 slaves in Berkeley Co., VA. The children may not be in order of their births. (VAB11-12, WVJE5 p523)) Children:

158.1John Alexander HAMILTON d. bef. 1820, m. 1st. in Frederick Co., MD, 22 Jun 1794, Eleanor PHILPOT. In this document he is described as John Alexander HAMILTON. He m. 2nd. Nellie ______? She survived him and was living with 3 young males and 2 young females in the 1820 census.

158.2Gavin (Gawin) HAMILTON, m.  Elizabeth ____?

158.2a Francis A. HAMILTON, d. 1830, author of the Frederick Co., will, describes John A. and Thomas, as uncles, and Catherine, wife of Francis as an aunt, leaving only Gavin to the be his father. There are other family members mentioned in the will, but the relationships are not revealed. The others are listed below:

158.4-Francis HAMILTON, m. 22 Jul 1800, Frederick Co., MD, Catherine PHILPOTT. This Francis HAMILTON may have been both a resident of Jefferson Co., VA, and Frederick Co., MD. He appears in Jefferson Co., in 1820, (MDFRB3) One child known:

158.5-Jacobina HAMILTON, was the 2nd. wife of brother-in-law, Walter BAKER. There was no issue in this marriage.

158.6-Elizabeth HAMILTON m. _____ Adams, and had at least one daughter.
