158Francis HAMILTON, m. (159) a Susan or a Margaret. In the 1820 Jefferson Co., Census, there is a Susan HAMILTON, living alone, age over 45 years. Francis HAMILTON lived in the area near Shepherdstown, his lands situated along the Potomac River. It must have been pretty close to the river, for James Rumsey stored his steamboad in HAMILTON'S cellar. In the trial run it was Francis HAMILTON who was at the helm of the boat. Francis was in Frederick Co., VA by 1740, according to a deed cited in Bushongs, History of Jefferson Co. What is unclear, is if this is Francis HAMILTON above, or his father. Francis above died probably after 1800 in Jefferson Co. If he were in Frederick Co., VA, in 1740, this would put him in his eighties by 1800, not uncommon, but a pretty advanced age in the late 18th. century. He left a will, but unfortunately it is was recorded in one of the lost books of Berkeley Co., VA(WV). However, in a court suit involving North vs. the heirs, all of the heirs of Francis HAMILTON were listed. The other information about the family has been gleaned from the will of Francis A. HAMILTON, a grandson of Francis HAMILTON, who died in 1822, in Frederick Co., MD, and the relationship he describes. In 1782-1787 he paid tax on 1 pole 5 slaves in Berkeley Co., VA.
