The Family of John WALTON and
Sarah _____?   and
(8th. Generation)
Extended Line

144-John WALTON m. (145) Sarah _____?. John WALTON, though not yet proven, may have been the son of Edward WALTON, York Co., VA, who in turn may have been the son of John WALTON of Lanchashire, ENG. The lands of this family lay along Gold Mine Creek in Henrico Co., north of Richmond, VA. WALTON'S Mine was one of the mines along the creek for which more than $20000 worth of gold was taken. The mine was in Louisa Count just above the courthouse about 50 miles from Richmond. John WALTON operated the old "Yellow Tavern" and ran a blacksmith shop which serviced the coaches running Richmond and the north during the middle 1770s. He is recorded in county books as having serviced the horses of the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. John WALTON owned the land, but it was his son William who later owned the WALTON gold mine, located up in Louisa County. John's land, once the site of "Yellow Tavern" was later owned by son Benjamin WALTON and his heirs. The old tavern burned sometime before the Civil War and near where it used to stand is now the monument to the Confederate leader, General J. E. B. Stuart, who was killed on that sot at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, on 11 May 1864. The maiden name of his wife Sarah is not known, and a marriage record has not been found. There is some conjecture on the part of WALTON researchers, that she may have been a Clairborne or a Leonard. The name Clairborne runs through the family; and the fact that their first son was names John Leonard has led to speculation that she may have been a Leonard. (FH6). Children:
