| "Serotonin Ashram" is a CD of music for the discovering mind. The music explores a vast area of styles. From the opening track with its deep space sounds, rhythmic drums and otherworldly processed vocal chants, to the track "Extended Stillness"with its slow ancient reflections of discovering language, to the last track with its fast paced sequences. This is another CD that is in a class by itself. Serotonin, being the chemical in the brain that basically is a neurotransmitter that transmits messages from the physical senses across the synapses, or gaps between adjacent cells and Ashram basically meaning temple or sanctuary. When you combine the two terms, you basically have the meaning "Senses Of Sanctuary". This CD is definitely a sanctuary of the senses. Highly recommended! |
| ... this is yet another great new work from Robert. As he explains it, serotonin is a neurotransmitter that communicates messages from the physical senses across the synapses in the brain. An ashram is a temple or sanctuary. So this work is a sanctuary of the senses. Most any Carty's work is that, but this one transmits some unique new sensations and feelings through your brain to your soul. The sound is smooth, eloquent, mysterious, and even a bit erotic. "Faces In The Trees" is a rhythmic, rich soundscape. The last two tracks are special too; "Extended Stillness" is brilliantly haunting and mysterious, while the finale "Garunda Valley" seems to combine everything masterfully together from an album that itself is full of variety. | A year 2000 release from Carty shows him starting the new millenium where he left the last one, producing solid space music. From the ethereal nirvanic tones of "Follow Your Bliss" to the pulsing rhythms of "Faces In The Trees," this is a strong release thoughout, with perhaps a little more variety than past Carty releases, at least the ones I'm familiar with. I really enjoy his occasional delving into slightly more aggresive electronic music here. Still for fans of relaxed space music, there is plenty to savor, such as the soft flutes of "Medicine Quest." This, too, features a pulsing beat, but it is light, and augments the spacier passages well. "Extended Stillness" should appeal to Steve Roach fans, with its deep drones and rainsticks, though Carty's bright synthesizer sounds are still present, of course. Light rhythms appear again , enhancing "Garunda Valley." The rhythm carries almost to the end, then fades as the music draws to a serene close. Trippy cover art adds to the space journey.
