Tarzan, My Ancestor?
"TARZAN"
AND LORD JOHN GREYSTOKE
It seems to me that our family history should bring to fore a bit of the humor that it contains,
being as factual as possible at the same time. From early on, I have had an interest in certain
periods of time, among them the assumed fictional character of "Tarzan", first as a book and
especially the older black and white movie. "Tarzan, Lord of The Jungle", who in reality is
Lord John Greystoke of Greystoke, England.
Let us start our family history 250 years before "Lord John Greystoke"...it's
1157 AD and we are in England. Geoffrey La Zouche and his wife, Hawise Fergan, are to
have issue; the Zouche line is a whole story in itself, for another time, but we needed to start
somewhere. Six generations later, great granddaughter sisters are born, they are Eve La
Zouche, Baroness of Berkeley when she married my grandfather M. Berkeley, Baron Of
Berkeley, and her sister, Lady Lucy De La Zouche, who is to marry Sir Thomas De
Grene, continuing the Greene line into the 1990s. Lucy and Thomas's line takes 26
generations to reach this writer, Eve and M. Berkeley's takes 29 generations to arrive at the
same place, John William Greene, born 24 January, 1935. Both lines are full of Ladies,
Lords, Sirs, etc...but that is not the subject today.
The subject is in part, the "Tarzan" connection. As you know, Tarzan was in reality,
Lord John Greystoke of Greystoke, England. Eve La Zouche's GGGrandson was Lord John
Greystoke; he is also my 17th Great Grandfather and my 4th Cousin 16 times
removed...remember, he is a nephew of Lucy. 600 years later my generation was born. My
attraction for the old Tarzan movie seems to relate somehow with the "fiction-fact" that much
prose and music seem to have been taken from events and places that surround us. Could it be
that the creator of Tarzan took some factual happenings and places and then created a
composite for us all to enjoy?
It's best now that we pay proper homage to Geoffrey La Zouche, whose pair of
GGG Granddaughters were to eventually result in my Grandparents, William Green and
Ella Duncan , over 20 generations later. Lest we not forget Geoffrey La Zouche, my 23rd
and 26th Great-grandfather; I'll bring to fore a couple of interesting facts: Eve La Zouche,
Baroness of Berkeley, is my 21st Great grandmother and also my 18th Great Aunt... her
sister, Lucy De La Zouche, is my 18th Great Grandmother and also my 21st Great Aunt.
Geoffrey La Zouche is my 23rd Great Grandfather and also my 26th Great Grandfather.
Lord John Greystoke, is my 17th Great Grandfather and also my 4th Cousin, 16 times
removed.
Somehow, watching Tarzan, the movie,
was easier when I was younger!
Now for the "genealogy" connection
The preceeding "Tarzan" is a "tongue in cheek" approach to genealogy, but the facts are true
and the following chart is a "factual, researched family line", of mine. This line goes back
much further but for the purposes of this day, I'll stop at the year 1436.
