THE WEDDING TIME of NEIL GREENE-EVELYN DOSKOCIL

When the "LECHNERS" were about to have a baby, Mrs. Lechner was having some problems that she needed help with...family friends of the Doskocils, young EVE was the one chosen to stay there and assist until Mrs. Lechner was able to handle things herself. Eve did an excellent job and all went well. A little later, NEIL GREENE was to room and board there while he taught at HAZEN CORNERS SCHOOL, his first teaching job. Neil liked playing with the newborn child and the Lechners commented that he and Eve Doskocil would make a great couple, they had never met, but Neil told them that he was going to marry that Doskocil girl someday.

Neil and Eve met about a year later, dances were one of the best meeting places then. Neil and Eve were to get together but Neil wouldn't tell Eve his name...Duncan was a good last name, but he disliked it as a middle name almost as much as he hated the name "Neil" It would be years before he would sign anything but "N.D. GREENE"...so EVE had to be content with not knowing the first two names of this spiffy dresser who was six years older than herself. He wore a suit, even when dancing regardless of the weather. Eve liked the suit, but parents, JOHN AND JOSIE, thought that work clothes like Eve's brother-in-law, LOWELL GEITZ, (HATTIES husband) the Wauzeka Blacksmith, wore were much more to their liking.

Besides, John and Josie's children were to be married by a priest. The worst of it was, Neil had a womans job...he was a teacher, better he was a farmer. Eve figured that Neil had joined the church he belonged to on his own and so must be a GOD fearing person, besides, he always wore a white shirt with his suit and wore a hat. Neil's nephew, CeciI McDaniel, were close friends too and in time were to plan with their sweethearts, EVE and HELEN CHRISTOPHERSON, a secret ELOPEMENT. The only ones to know of the secret plans were Cecil's parents, ROY and GLADYS MCDANIEL [Neil's sister], until at least a month after the big day.

Helen was teaching school and school boards disapproved of teachers marrying. The day arrives and the four sort of convince Gladys that her son is old enough to marry and they start out their trip to GALENA IL...everyone gets married in Galena, home of a US PRESIDENT (GRANT) and at one time a bigger city than CHICAGO. It's March and it's COLD. The car trip to BOSCOBEL to catch the train is made and nobody saw them!! A wintry trip to Galena, the train is backing into town, and the four of them are in the back of the train to see the sights...the conductor tells them "the courthouse is Up there".

There is some time to enjoy before the nuptials and so as not to waste any of it Neil and Cecil decide to get haircuts. The gals don't understand what's so funny when the guys reappear until it's explained that the barbers were "Queers" [the word commonly used in the early 1900s] and tried very hard to impress the two good looking (20 & 26 yr. olds) guys with the latest matchflame haircuts.

It's time for the weddings and Cecil has been prepped on saying he was two years older than he really was so they can get married...Neil was so nervous that when asked how old he was he said two years older than he actually was too.

The weddings go well and it's time for the train ride back to Boscobel. It's a nervous, secret, happy, and exciting trip to the car, the weather is getting worse and the snow is coming in drifts on the primitive roads. Helen goes to her parents home in Fennimore WI. Cecil, Neil, and Evelyn drive out highway 60 from Boscobel towards the McDaniel farm...up on a ridge near IRISH RIDGE. Highway 60 is about as far as the car will go through the drifts as going uphill on the basically dirt roads that are now impassable with the car nearly stuck in snow...well it's time to abandon the car and walk to the farm. It's to be an eventful walk for Evelyn, she is only just recovering from having her appendices removed.

Cecil is to park the car somehow out of the way while Neil and Eve start the uphill trek to the warm farmhouse. Neil is carrying his suit in a box as is Cecil...the clothes they are wearing are not their warmest, thin and dressy, their best for this important day but now not much protection against the blowing snow. Evelyn's thin dress, thin shoes with thin "goulashes" in knee deep snow, none of their attire was meant for an arctic blast. Eve's "golashes slip off and Neil drops his suit box. Eve is not doing well...she wants to sit down and sleep for a while. Meanwhile Cecil has taken a shortcut he knows on the ravine side trying to catch up with them...thinking they are ahead of him, he hurries to the farmhouse.

By the time Neil and Evelyn get to the house, Neil is almost carrying Eve...she passes out as they go through the door and into the warm room. Gladys makes her drink some (lots) of warm tea while Roy and Neil rub her hands and feet with snow [that was the accepted way to relieve frostbite at the time]. After a couple days Evelyn had recovered completely and didn't even catch a cold. While Evelyn was resting, Neil went back out for the boxes of suits and safely recovered them too. That leaves the young couples with the forgotten for a while problem, how to tell the folks...and when?

One month passes, Eve is back working at ZEAHS, Neil is teaching at Lower Shanghai Ridge School [about 4 miles from Wauzeka and 3 miles from the Doskocil farm], Cecil is working on the McDaniel farm, and Helen is teaching near Fennimore. It's nearly spring and it's time to tell the folks. Evelyn knew how John and Josie were going to react so telling them in person is not advisable, in fact, telling them by telephone seemed too risky...a letter is written and mailed...the results are expected and immediate...John and Josie are not pleased!!! Neil faced his parents William and Ella with the news...they are shall we say, "less than elated" All parents wanted a church wedding, their church! Eve was not what the Greens had wanted for their youngest son... the Doskocils wanted a bit more for their youngest daughter than to marry a Protestant who did a womans job of teaching. To say the very least, the parents are not impressed! A reception or "get-together" for the official announcement, along with the article in the newspaper and a trip to the Boscobel Studio for pictures with the "McDaniels"...the WEDDING is now a matter of fact...WE'RE MARRIED...IT'S 1932!!!!!!

Compiled and written by Neil and Evelyn's firstborn, John William Greene. This is as factual as possible and is condensed from many hours of questions and narrative with Evelyn Margaret Doskocil Greene, wife of Neil Duncan Greene who continued to wear white shirts and suits the rest of his life... EVE, the "LOVING MOTHER of JANET, EULALA, and JOHN".In our last conversation, November of 1995; EVE, MOM, said "BOY, IT SEEMS LIKE IT WAS ONLY YESTERDAY, I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M ALMOST EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS OLD... AND I FEEL SO GOOD AND I'M SO LUCKY."
