Jemel Davila led all scorers for the second straight game with 19 including two three-pointers. Antonio Lattimer contributed 15 and Udonis Haslem 13 as Miami High won 30 games for the 13th straight season. MHS next faces Coral Gables for the District 15-6A championship.

February 17,1998
Miami High-73 Coral Gables-45
(29-1)

Miami High captured the District 15-6A championship by crushing Coral Gables for the third time this year. The Cavaliers were able to stay in the game for a quarter by milking the clock on each possession as Miami High's press was largely ineffective in the first quarter. However, MHS built on its 10-8 first quarter lead by outscoring Gables 23-11 in the second. Steven Blake hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to seal Coral Gables' fate. Blake scored all 11 of his points in the first half. In the opening moments of the second half, Sylbrin Robinson set the tone by intercepting consecutive Gables' passes and going in for the uncontested score on both occassions. An 11-2 spurt to start the third quarter increased the MHS lead to 44-21. Jemel Davila scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and joined Blake with 3 three-pointers for the game. Antonio Lattimer was the only other double figure scorer with 10 points.Miami High next advances to play Palmetto which lost to Southridge 63-53 in the District 16-6A championship game.

February 20,1998
Miami High-83 Palmetto-41
(30-1)

The Stingarees advanced to the Region4-6A semi-finals with a convincing victory against Palmetto. How bad was this game? In the first minute and 30 seconds of the second half, Antonio Lattimer scored nine points and Palmetto had none. At that point the score was 51-21 and MHS coasted with its third team getting major minutes in the third and fourth quarters. Miami High next faces American next Tuesday. If the Stings win that one, Ted Dupuay and his Cape Coral Mariner team may await in the sectional final which would be played at Miami High.

Lattimer-21,Haslem-12,Robinson-9,Fletcher-9,Davila-6,Fray-6,Wright-5,Dieudonne-4,Oliva-3,Blake-2,Wilson-2,Ambrose-2,Cuenca-2.

February 24,1998
Miami High-96 American-44
(31-1)

Miami High crushed American from the opening tip to advance to the Region 4-6A championship against the winner of Cape Coral Mariner and Pompano Beach Ely. The Stingarees got numerous dunks early in the game against a poor defensive effort by the Patriots. After opening up the inside game, the Stingarees started hitting three-pointers inlcuding a shot from half-court at the end of the third quarter by Jemel Davila. The halftime score was 51-11 and Miami High's starters played only a couple of minutes in the second half. The Stingarees are now one win away from advancing to the state final four in Lakeland.

Davila-18,Haslem-15,Shannon-13,Wilson-10,Blake-8,Lattimore-8,Wright-6,Dieudonne-6,Cuenca-4,Ambrose-3,Fray-3,Robinson-2.

February 27,1998
Miami High-106 Cape Coral Mariner-60
(32-1)

Ted Dupay is an excellent little player, but Miami High is one mighty outstanding team. The bigger and stronger Stingarees imposed their will early on the Mariner Tritons and crushed the Cape Coral school's dreams of going to Lakeland. Instead MHS will advance to Lakeland for the third straight year, where they will face Orlando Dr. Phillips in the semi-final for the third straight year. Mariner was hounded all game long by tremendous pressure defense from the Stingarees. Miami High guard Bethel Fletcher blocked three of Dupay's shots and along with help from Antonio Lattimer and Steven Blake limited Dupay to 21 points, his lowest scoring output of the season. Dupay hit only 7 of 27 shots and only 3-17 from three-point land. Offensively, the Stingarees were led by Udonis Haslem with 26 points and sophomore Jemel Davila with 23 points including 7 three-pointers. Sylbrin Robinson added 16 points and 19 rebounds and point guard Steven Blake added 10 points, 8 assists and 6 steals. A Miami High victory in the semi-final could produce a third encounter with Broward powerhouse Fort Lauderdale Dillard, which is playing its best basketball of the season.

Haslem-26,Davila-23,Robinson-16,Lattimer-12,Blake-10,Wright-8,Cuenca-3,Fletcher-2,Wilson-2,Fray-2,Oliva-2.

March 05,1998
Miami High-62 Orlando Dr. Phillips-41
(33-1)

The Stingarees advanced to the state championship game by defeating Dr. Phillips in the semi-finals for the third straight year. The game was excrutiating to watch as both teams played tough defense and there were few fast break opportunities. Miami jumped to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and maintained an 8-12 point lead for most of the half. MHS led 25-16 at the half after outscoring the Orlando team 10-9 in the second quarter. An 11-2 run to open the second half basically ended what little suspense the game had. Udonis Haslem led MHS with 17 points and 10 rebounds and fellow big man Sylbrin Robinson added 7 points 16 rebounds and five steals as Miami High dominated the boards. Point guard Steven Blake had another exceptional floor game contributing 9 points 3 assists and 5 steals. Antonio Lattimer joined Haslem in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore reserve Jemel Davila who had led the Stingarees in scoring during the playoffs went 0-5 from three-point land and finished with 2 points. Miami High next plays Orlando Edgewater for the 1998 class 6-A state championship. Edgewater was a surprise 65-63 winner over Fort Lauderdale Dillard. The Eagles overcame a nine point halftime lead to advance to the championship game.

March 07,1998
Miami High-89 Orlando Edgewater-56
(34-1)

"Coach Frank Martin and the Stingarees will be present in the Lakeland Center the first weekend in March to accept the trophy." Those words were written by Miami Herald prep writer Pedro F. Fonteboa on November 11, 1997 during the Herald's high school basketall preview. Of course it did not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Stingarees would be heavy favorites after the transfers of Antonio Latimer and Steven Blake. As expected Miami High won the state class 6-A state championship in a rout 89-56 over Orlando's Edgewater High. It was the third straight championship for the Stingarees and their 8th in the last 12 years. It was the fourth time their victory margin has exceeded 28 points including three 33 point victories over Orlando area teams Oakridge, Oviedo and Edgewater. However, the game was not devoid of drama as the spirited Eagles from Edgewater used their quickness to put up a strong fight against the heavily favored Stingarees. The referees were again a factor in Lakeland. After letting the teams play in both semi-finals on Thursday, the referees became whistle happy calling a combined 58 fouls in the game. The refs did not allow the anticipated battle between MHS big man Udonis Haslem(6-8,260lbs.)and Edgewater's Nigel Dixon(6-10,360lbs.) to materialize as Haslem picked up two touch fouls in the first 30 seconds of the game and Dixon got three fouls in the game's first two minutes. Both players sat for the remainder of the first half. Miami High's Sylbrin Robinson went inside in Haslem's absence and conributed 11 points and 10 rebounds in getting the tourney's MVP award. Robinson had 46 rebounds in his last three playoff games. Without either big man, the first half was a run and gun affair with Edgewater's silky smooth Marquis Daniels hitting shots from all angles to finish the half with 16 points. MHS supersub Jemel Davila hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 first half points. Steven Blake contribute 8 points in the half and kept Edgewater's pressure defense at bay. Daniels scored five straight points to open the second half and suddenly Miami High's lead was down to 43-37 with 7 minutes and 16 seconds left in the third quarter. But the Stingarees went on an 14-2 run capped by a Steven Blake three-pointer to extend the lead to 57-39. They would end the third quarter with a 64-46 lead. Then the Stings went on a 20-5 run in the first four minutes of the final quarter as Steven Blake and Jemel Davila hit three-pointers during the run. Daniel Dieudonne would blow a lay-up in the waning seconds that would have given MHS the biggest margin of victory in a state championship game. Daniels, one of the top juniors in the state, led all scorers with 24 points. The Stingarees had five players in double figures with Jemel Davila leading the way with 22. Antonio Latimer added 18 and Udonis Haslem finished with 10 points, all coming in the second half. Steven Blake finished with 14 points 5 assists and just two turnovers against Edgewater's fast, pressing defense. In the opinion of this writer Blake deserved the tourney MVP award because of his tremendous play, although Sylbrin Robinson was also outstanding in both games in Lakeland. Both of these teams will most likely be back in Lakeland next year. Edgewater returns their star 6-6 Marquis Daniels, their big man 6-10 Nigel Dixon, second leading scorer 6-0 Marlo Otis, athletic 6-1 Kennard Orange and super quick point guard 5-9 Brian Pope. Miami High will feature one of the nation's top backcourts with senior point guard 6-3 Steven Blake and junior shooter 6-4 Jemel Davila. Inside the Stingarees will feature 6-6 Cornelious Wright who scored 6 key points in the state final when Udonis Haslem was in foul trouble. At small forward will be 6-5 Javorie Wilson who didn't play well during the playoffs. And the likely defensive presence inside will be 6-7 Damion Fray.

Davila 8-15,1-1=22,Latimer 6-12,6-8=18,Blake 5-9,0-2=14, Robinson 5-8,1-2=11 ,Haslem 5-10,0-3=10,Wright 3-3,0-0=6,Fray 1-2,1-4=3,Wilson 0-2,3-5=3,Fletcher 0-3,2-4=2.
