The entry for Amazons in The American Heritage Dictionary states:

Am-a-zon n1.Gk. Myth. A member of a nation of female warriors reputed to have lived in Scythia, near the Black Sea. 2.Often amazon. A tall, vigorous, strong-willed woman. [ME <<>Lat. Amazon <<>Gk Amazon (long o).]

There are many other Amazon types:

• Xena, the Warrior Princess
• Gabrielle, Amazon Queen (Xena)
• Callistro, Crazed Immortal (Xena)
• Red Sonja
• She-Hulk
• Wonder Girl (orginally, Wonder Woman's adopted sister)
• She-Ra (He-Man's twin sister)
• Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
• AndrAIa, Game Sprite (ReBoot)
• Dot Matrix, Business Woman and COMMAND.COM (mayor) of Mainframe. (ReBoot)
• Mouse, hacker (ReBoot)

• Boadicea, Warrior Queen of the Celts. Inspiration for Xena.
• Gloria Steinen, American Feminist, Author, and Lecturer.
• Molly Pitcher, American Revolutionary.
• Mary Read, Pirate
• Anne Bonny, Pirate
• Susan B. Anthony, American Reformer
• Clara Barton, Founder of the American Red Cross.
