The entry for Amazons in The American Heritage Dictionary states:
Am-a-zon n1.Gk. Myth. A member of a nation of female warriors reputed to have lived in Scythia, near the Black Sea. 2.Often amazon. A tall, vigorous, strong-willed woman. [ME <<>Lat. Amazon <<>Gk Amazon (long o).]
There are many other Amazon types:
- Xena, the Warrior Princess
- Gabrielle, Amazon Queen (Xena)
- Callistro, Crazed Immortal (Xena)
- Red Sonja
- She-Hulk
- Wonder Girl (orginally, Wonder Woman's adopted sister)
- She-Ra (He-Man's twin sister)
- Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
- AndrAIa, Game Sprite (ReBoot)
- Dot Matrix, Business Woman and COMMAND.COM (mayor) of Mainframe. (ReBoot)
- Mouse, hacker (ReBoot)
Those, of course, are fictional Amazons. There were/are historical Amazons, as well:

- Hatshepsut, Egyptian Queen, named herself, "Pharaoh", or king.

- Queen Victora of England.
- Florence Nightingale, British Nursing Pioneer
- Amelia Earheart, Pilot.
- Joan of Arc, French Soldier.
- Boadicea, Warrior Queen of the Celts. Inspiration for Xena.
- Gloria Steinen, American Feminist, Author, and Lecturer.
- Molly Pitcher, American Revolutionary.
- Mary Read, Pirate
- Anne Bonny, Pirate
- Susan B. Anthony, American Reformer
- Clara Barton, Founder of the American Red Cross.
- Carrie Chapman Catt, American Suffragist
