Sprite and Binome Generation
By: Jo Ann Montgomery

To follow up on my System Generation Sheet, here is a more in-depth generation procedure on sprites and binomes. These charts are a little different from the System Generation Sheet in that they use dice to help decide things like skin color, hair color, eye color, etc.

A note on dice: Most of us only have access to the six-sided dice (d6), which can be found almost anywhere cards and games are sold. Some of us are lucky enough to have dice with fewer or more than six sides. These can be found in hobby shops, toy stores, book stores, and anywhere that role-playing games are sold. These dice are: Four-sided (d4); Eight-sided (d8); Ten-sided (d10); Tweleve-sided (d12); and Twenty-sided (d20). There are rare ones that have Twenty-four sides (d24) and One Hundred sides (d100). The d100 sided are percentile dice (d%). But you don't need the d100 die to role d%. Two different color d10 will do. Just have one die be the first number, and the other be the second number. Example: Say that you have two d10, one red and one white. The red die is the first number, and the white is the second number. Roll them seperately or together. The red die shows an eight and the white die shows a five. The d% roll is 85. A roll of two zeros (00) is a roll of 100. The best d% I have found is two ten-sided dice, one with 00-90, the other, with 0-9. The 00-90 is clearly the ten's place numbers, while the 0-9 is the one's place numbers. With this arrangement, both dice can be the same color. (Mine are white.) The longer lists will require the other types of dice, although I will include simular lists to for use with the the standard six-sided dice.

a) Name and gender: Names are, strangely, the hardest part to fill, especialy if you are trying to name the characters like they do in ReBoot, and use computer terms (As in Dot Matrix and Mouse). Regular names (like Bob) can also be used. Your two best sources for ReBoot names are baby name books (there are a lot of good ones out there; look around) and computer terms books (a good one --the one I have-- is DDC Quick Reference Guide to Computer Terms by Susan Davis Sherwin). Unless you already have a name in mind, the name can be left for last.

e) Speech pattern: How does your sprite or binome sound? Mouse talks like a Southern Belle, Mr. Pearson speaks with a Scottish accent, Turbo talks like a cowboy. Speech patterns help designate character personality. Beside each pattern type, if possible, is a name in parenthases of a known character with that speech pattern.

f) Function (also called "Format"): What does your sprite or binome do? Guardian? Business? Multitasking? Or, like Little Enzo, has his/her function/format yet to be established?

Table 5. Function/Format
RollFunction/Format
01-05Guardian (Bob) (Rare: 1d6. If more then one, choose leader.)
06-10Business (Dot Matrix; Al)
11-15Multi-tasking (Dot Matrix)
16-20Hacker (Mouse)
21-23Search Engine (Ray Tracer) (Rare: Should be only one if permenant resident.)
24-46Renagade (Matrix)
47-49Game Sprite (AndrAIa) (Rare: AndrAIa is the only known game sprite to leave her game.)
50-54Data Dump (Mr. Pearson)
55-59COMMAND.COM (Dot Matrix) (Very Rare: Only one in office per system.)
60-69Service (Cecil; Al's Waiter)
70-89Media (Mike, the T.V.)
90-97Other
98-00No format (Extremely Rare)

Note on Guardians: More then one Guardian in any given system is a rare occurance. Usually, there is only one in the system. If there is more then one Guardian in the system, roll 1d6. This will give you the number of Guardians. Two or more Guardians in a system are always acting as a team --no loner Guardians. One Guardian will act as leader. Example: Mainframe's Guardians now total four: Bob, Matrix, Wild Card, and Jo Ann. Bob is our leader.

The other Rare formats (Search Engine, Game Sprite, COMMAND.COM, and No format.) are to be used with caution. There should be only one of each in any given system, especially the COMMAND.COM. The No format should be only be used with extreme caution. Normally, only child sprites would have no funtion (they have not been programed with one, yet), but their formats would be "Child". Little Enzo is introdused as Dot's little brother format, but until he was made a Cadet Guardian (first Enzo), he had no formal function.

There is really no way to put this in a six-die chart, so you'll have to choose on this one.

g) Other: This is information you fill in with. No chart can really help you with this, but I'll give you a few suggestions to help you think of something:

Note: Virues can also be generated using this system. For function/format, subsitute Virus or Viral. Viral sprites and binomes are colored the same as the virus that infected them. Megabyte was metalic blue, with neon green trim and neon green-eyes with red pupils. His virals were also metalic blue and neon-green, with neon-green eyes and red pupils. Their icons were green and black ReBoot icons.
