Yarbrough And Peoples

The duo of Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples was one of the most popular R&B pairs of the 80s, placing five singles in the R&B Top 10. The married couple had known each other since childhood, when they shared the same piano teacher in the Dallas, Texas, USA area and sang together in their church choir. They lost track of each other during their college days and Yarbrough joined the R&B group Grand Theft. He was discovered by members of the Gap Band, who offered him work as a backing singer, after which Yarbrough returned to his own group. Peoples soon joined him onstage and they were taken on as a duo by the Gap band’s manager and producer. Yarbrough And Peoples recorded their debut album for Mercury Records in 1980, which yielded the number 1 R&B single ‘Don’t Stop The Music’, which later reached the pop Top 20. Yarbrough and Peoples switched over to the Total Experience label in 1982 and continued their hit streak for four more years with the singles ‘Heartbeats’ (number 10 R&B in 1983), ‘Don’t Waste Your Time’ (number 1 R&B in 1984), ‘Guilty’ (number 2 R&B in 1986) and ‘I Wouldn’t Lie’ (number 6 R&B in 1986).
