Kevin Christensen, Doug Szczublewski, and Zach Treolo all qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament this coming weekend as the Greenon Team finished an impressive 11th out of 43 teams in the District Wrestling Tournament held at Goshen High School. The Greenon wrestlers went a combined 13-7 against some of the best wrestler's in the Southwest Area. Coach Dooley, who is in his 3rd season at Greenon, continued his amazing streak of sending at least two wrestler's to the State Tournament during his tenure at Greenon. In Coach Dooley's first two seasons, Greenon qualified two wrestler's each season for the State Tournament. Coach Dooley's team was able to surpass that figure this year as three wrestler's qualified this season, and a fourth wrestler, Jeremiah Lay, came up two wins short of qualifying for the State Tournament.

Freshman Kevin Christensen, wrestling in the 103 lb weight division, had the easiest path to the State tournament as he stayed undefeated until the Championship match by defeating three wrestlers who had a combined 72 wins between them. Kevin lost in the championship match to Aaron Hart of Graham by a 3-2 score to finish in 2nd place for the tournament. Even though he didn't win first place, Kevin's 2nd place finish makes him the first freshman wrestler for Greenon to qualify for a State Tournament and it is believed his 36 wins are also a school record for a freshman.

Senior's Doug Szczublewski at 125 lbs and Zach Treolo at 130 lbs worked a little harder for their state trip as they both fought back from the consolation bracket. Zach went 1-1 in his first two matches, and facing elimination from the tournament, needed to win 3 straight matches against opponents who averaged 28 wins each. Not a problem as Zach won his first match by pin, won his second match 13-0, and then in his 3rd match he beat Owen Powell (28-6) of Preble Shawnee 8-5 to clinch a spot in the State Tournament. Doug Szczublewski also went 1-1 in his first two matches to fall into the consolation bracket. Doug then proceeded to win his next three matches by scores of 3-1, 4-3 and 7-4 against three opponents who had combined for 83 wins during the season. Doug's trip to the state was a testamount to his wrestling ability as he had missed much of the regular season with injury and did not return to the wrestling mats until the post season CBC League Tournament during the weekend of February 8th.

Greenon's Jeremiah Lay also competed in the District Tournament and was able to pick up two wins before being eliminated by Matt Land of Valley View by a score of 4-2. Jeremiah concludes his career at Greenon with an outstanding 33-11 record this season.

The State Wrestling Tournament will begin on Thursday, February 27th at the Schotenstein Center in Columbus and will continue throughout the weekend.
