Bears!
Home
Back
We began our unit with the fairy tale "Goldilocks and Three Bears". This is very familiar story for the children. We dramatized the story using puppets and then the children had an opportunity to retell the story using pictures. We had a teddy bear party when the children brought their teddy bears to school - or a favourite stuffed animal. We continued  our study of bears by learning about real bears. We read stories about hibernation and began to learn about the habitat and life of a bear.
Teddy Bear Poem
I like to include a poem for every unit. We used this familiar action rhyme to learn some high frequency words. The children learned the actions and were provided with their own copy of the poem to illustrate for their poetry book.
Bears, Bears Everywhere!
We decorated our bulletin board with the teddy bears the children created.
Gummy Bear Graphing
This was an exciting way to learn about graphing! The children started with a handful of gummy bears in four colours - red, orange, green and yellow. I had created the graphing sheet ahead of time. The children placed their gummy bears (one in each box) beside its corresponding colour. As the children were excited to eat the gummy bears, I explained that when the eat a bear, they had to colour the box it was on. This was a great way to introduce graphing. At the end, I conference with each child asking, "Which colour did you have the most of?" and "Which colour did you have the least of?"
Teddy Bear Craft
This craft was early in the year. In previous crafts, I demonstrated how to cut a square into a circle. To create the teddy bear face, I gave the children a square of brown or black construction paper. The children then cut a circle, added two circles for ears and two circles for eyes and a triangle for the nose.
