Learning to Read In Kindergarten
Jolly Phonics
Jolly Phonics is a program to help the children learn the letters of the alphabet. It is an introduction to the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. Each letter has a story, an action and a song to help your child remember the names of the letters (upper and lower case) and the sound of each letter. We will be creating three Jolly Phonics books at school. After each one is completed, your child will bring it home to share and practise. Ask your child to tell you the story, the sound that the letter makes and the name of the letter.
The Jolly Phonics program is implemented as an introduction to the letters and sounds for the Junior Kindergarten children and a review of the letters and sounds for the Senior Kindergarten children.

Alphabet Books
The Senior Kindergarten children will be creating their own alphabet book while the Junior Kindergarten children create their Jolly Phonics Book. Each page of the alphabet book will consist of the letter (capital and lower case), the letter printed by the children, a picture and a word. As each letter is reviewed through Jolly Phonics, the SK children will complete a page for that letter.

Poetry Books
Throughout the year, your child will be creating a poetry book. This will be a collection of songs and poems that we have learned during each theme/unit. The children start by learning the song/poem orally. We practise singing and saying the poem a few times each day. The poem is then written out on chart paper, large enough for each child to see. We practise pointing to each word, look for sounds, letters and words we know. We learn new words and a variety of reading strategies. The children then get their own copy of the poem to illustrate. Throughout the year, the children are encouraged to read their poetry books during reading time or activity time. At the end of the year, the children get to take home their completed poetry books to share with family and friends.

Borrow-A-Book (SK Leveled Reading Program)

We will be starting our levelled reading borrow-a-book program with the Senior Kindergarten children near the end of September. Each day your child will bring home a book they have been learning to read at school. Encourage your child to share each book many times: with you, with friends and relatives or to him/herself. Parents will be asked to complete the comment section of the reading log and initial each entry. The books are to be returned each school day so that a new book can be borrowed. Make reading a positive, pleasant experience for your child. Give him/her lots of praise, such as "You read that very well", "Good work!", "You read very fluently".
Establishing a positive attitude towards reading is very important.
