Unlike the strange film that this music was composed for, the score by Joel McNeely does rather well on its own. Some of the tracks seem to draw their inspiration from the old James Bond scores by John Barry. In this way they are a pleasure to listen to. However, as with his score for Shadows of the Empire, McNeely proves that he has the ability to write good music. With a rather catchy opening track, McNeely sets the tone for the rest of the soundtrack. Using an almost whispered whistle, McNeely introduces the main theme in Main Title.

When he's not presenting us with snippets of this main theme presented in varying ways dependent on the mood of the scene, McNeely comes up with a score that is at times quite good and at other times like a case of deja vu. What do I mean? Well, take Flight of the Mechanical Bees as an example. The track starts off in a way that led me to believe for a second that I was listening to something written by Alan Silvestri. From there, the track led into a rather interesting racing piece meant to accompany the scene with the killer mechanized bees. As such there was of course the requisite, abbreviated use of the original Flight of the Bumblebee.

The action portions of the score are well written and performed rather well. Even the softer, more romantic pieces are played out well without being rather melodramatic. It was elements such as this that lead me to compare it to a Barry Bond score. Don't let your judgement of the movie lead you to refuse to even look at this score, it has moments that make this soundtrack worth listening to.
