Braveheart

Back in 1995 when I got the first Braveheart soundtrack I knew that it was destined for great things. Unfortunately, the Academy didn't think so and passed James Horner over for the Oscar for Best Dramatic Score. I was disappointed to say the least, but many felt that Horner didn't deserve an Oscar. But to testify to that fact that his score was appreciated a second CD entitled More Music From Braveheart was released. While it is essentially the same soundtrack as the previous one, several cues missing from the first release have found their way on this soundtrack and others have been omitted. In addition, several tracks have been added that were not in the movie were added, but being traditional Scottish bagpipe music, it fits in very well with the rest of the soundtrack.

Also, as in the Apollo 13 soundtrack, in this release, there is dialogue from the movie included. Whether it serves to enhance or detract from the listening experience is up to the listener. For example, in my case, one of my favorite tracks from the first release was The Legend Spreads, but this time, in addition to the music, the accompanying dialogue has been included, overlaying the first few seconds of the track. The main point of my getting the first soundtrack was so that I could hear that music without the dialogue so I was a little upset. However, in the case of "Sons of Scotland" Mel Gibson's rousing speech is heard in portion and it serves to enhance the moment. As does the dialogue found in the epilogue portion of the soundtrack (tracks 20 - 22).

As I stated in my review of the first release, even though I enjoy the Apollo 13 soundtrack as much as the Braveheart soundtrack, I still think that this one was the better of the two that earned Horner an Oscar nomination.
