According to repeated statements by Stallone himself, Daylight was to be his last action movie, well, we might as well enjoy it if it is because it is a pretty good movie. Very real and very believable. And if his success with Copland is any indication, I think Stallone may be out of action movies for quite some time. Back to Daylight. I thought that for a story dealing with a small group of people trapped in a tunnel, trying to get out, the score would be quite dark and confining like James Horner's Aliens but composer Randy Edelman decided to go another direction altogether. He keeps the tension going by using a full orchestra for the most part.

The opening track Daylight is heard in the movie over the opening credits and is a catchy little driving piece. For a while it seems that that's the last we've heard of it and indeed, Edelman reprises it a limited number of times. One of the other good themes that Edelman writes for the score is Latura's Theme. This theme is reprised many times, especially when something emotional happens in the movie. It is kind of strange that the theme for Stallone's character is heard during emotional scenes and the Daylight theme accompanies many of his heroic actions. Edelman himself plays the piano in most portions and he uses it quite a bit with the orchestra. The vocal songs are thankfully tacked on at the end. Another plus is the fact that the better of the two is first. Bruce Roberts and Donna Summer belt out Whenever There is Love with much gusto. Unfortunately this song wasn't the privy to the same popularity as My Heart Will Go On. The last song is sung by the appropriately named group Ho-Hum. It is one of the worst songs I've heard but since it is at the very end, there is no need to rush over to the CD player to hit the skip button, since it's at the end, just hit stop before you get to it. Overall this score is a fine piece of work from Randy Edelman who definitely has a knack for composing good scores.
