While I enjoyed Rabin's score to the action-packed Armageddon, I was a little curious as to what he would come up with this film. Obviously, regardless of what he did, the comparisons between it and Jaws would be unavoidable. But I was moderately surprised to find that this score was a bit better than my expectations and much better than the film as a whole. The main theme of the movie is introduced to us in (oddly enough) the last orchestral piece in the film, appropriately named Aftermath. The theme itself is decent and makes much more use of orchestra than Armageddon did but it is nothing to get excited about.

As with Armageddon Rabin does use choral passages here and there to give the score a bit of an etherial sound. I don't know if that's what the films's director, Renny Harlin, was going for but it seemed a little odd considering the fact that this is a movie about mutant sharks attacking a group of scientists in the middle of the ocean. While I do like Rabin, I feel that this score isn't his best work. I'm sure we'll be hearing more from him as he is fast becoming a popular action composer. I just hope that his future projects do a bit better. By the way, when looking for this score in stores, make sure you pick up the one that has Trevor Rabin's name on the cover. As is the trend these days, there are two albums for the film. The first with vocal songs and the second being this one.
