This is one of the first Bond scores I can honestly say I was disappointed with. However, it isn't fair to be too harsh to Eric Serra, because following in the footsteps of a major composer such as John Barry is no easy task. Eric Serra's style of music for the film was consistent with the score he wrote for The Professional, and although it worked well in that film, it wasn't exactly suited to the Bond movies. Relying mainly on synthesizers, the score didn't have any particular theme carried out through the course of the movie. It seemed that there were different musical themes during every scene. The only theme that does occur more than once is The Severnaya Suite, and while being more on the romantic side, it doesn't occur enough to be remembered that easily. In addition, Serra rarely makes use of the James Bond theme and even when it is utilized, it is quite brief and sometimes unrecognizeable.

As for the songs, Tina Turner's crooning of the title song is pretty good, but not up to the level of previous efforts. It seems as if she tries to emulate Shirley Basey's style but it's not quite the same. As for Eric Serra's song, I don't really see how it fits into the movie at all. After hearing it, I forget that I just heard a Bond score and start thinking of romantic movies. While Bond is a romantic when he needs to be, it's all in the line of duty and nothing more. Still, if you have a choice of this one or another Bond score, go with the other, but if you're a die hard fan, put your money down and don't look back.
