For those of you out there wondering why you've never heard of the movie Outlaws relax. It's not a movie, it's a computer game. What? You didn't think they released soundtracks to computer games. They don't for the most part but you see, Outlaws is a special case. First some background. Outlaws was released a couple of years back as a first person shooter set in the wild west. Don't know what that means? Well, for the laymen out there that means that it was basically Doom with cowboys. Still don't know what that means? I suggest you hit your local computer store and ask. Anyway, back to the game. This was the first time that a computer game had really explored this genre of game. In order to appeal to fans of Clint Eastwood's westerns, the game was made like a spaghetti western by Sergio Leone. As such the music had to be of the same style.

Clint Bajakian hit the nail right on the head with his score. Based on the scores of Ennio Morricone, Bajakian supplies a wild west score chock full of western flair. Often times the score seems like a series of outtakes from a Sergio Leone score. With twangy guitars, harmonicas, whistles, "yipee-kai-yeahs" and train whistles, this score covers it all. I particularly like Sanctuary and Sanchez the Outlaw which has a Spanish tune for the bandit. Even the stereotypical music accompanying the native American's in oldtime movies is not forgotten, it is back with a vengence in Two Feathers.

I recently reinstalled this game and played it all the way through. I enjoyed the game itself, but I think a large part of it was due to the music. It is not often that a score for a game is as appropriate as this one is for Outlaws. I have no idea how widely available this score is. I was lucky enough to find a copy at a used CD store near my university. I assume that since this is a game by Lucasarts, you may want to check the Lucasarts web site. If you are a fan of the western scores of Ennio Morricone, you should take every effort to find this score. You will not be disappointed.
